Introduction
 

Diqing Autonomous Prefecture is located in the northwestern part of Yunnan Province, at the intersection of Yunnan Province, Sichuan Province and Tibet Autonomous Region. It covers an area of 23,870 sq km. Its population is 0.38 million.

The climate of Diqing varies largely with different altitudes. There is plenty of sunshine and a large temperature difference between day and night, and there are distinct dry and humid seasons.

Diqing is rich in natural resources. Forests cover approximately 73.9% of its lands. Theoretical reserves of hydro energy reach 16.5 million kw, accounting for 15% of the province's total. Mineral resources such as copper, tungsten, molybdenum, lead and zinc are abundant. In addition, Diqing is a major tourist destination, as the world famous Shangri-La is located in the prefecture.

Transportation in Diqing mainly relies on highways and airlines. Diqing has its own airport, namely Shangri-La Airport, which operates scheduled flights to domestic major cities such as Kunming, the capital of Yunnan, Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, Beijing, the capital of China, and Shanghai.
 
Economic Features
 
Diqing realized GDP of RMB 7.71 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 19.5% year on year. The prefecture's GDP accounted for approximately 1.2% of the province's total.

The agricultural sector, the smallest contributor to the prefecture's economy, generated value-added output of RMB 734 million in 2010, accounting for 9.5% of the prefecture's GDP. Total output of the sector amounted to RMB 1.17 billion, up 6.75% year on year.

The secondary industry (industry and construction) realized value-added output of RMB 2.95 billion in 2010, accounting for 38.3% of the prefecture's total.

The industrial sector realized total industrial output of RMB 3.4 billion, up 32.9% year on year, while industrial output of enterprises with designated size or above increased by 30.6% to RMB 2.7 billion, contributing 79.4% to the industrial sector's total. Heavy and light industrial enterprises with designated size or above realized industrial output of RMB 2.03 billion and RMB 724.43 million, contributing 74% and 26% respectively to the total.

Service sector, the largest contributor to the prefecture's economy, generated value-added output of RMB 4.02 billion, accounting for 52.2% of the prefecture's total GDP in 2010.

Tourism is an important pillar of the service sector. During 2010, 6.02 million tourists visited the prefecture, up 14.6% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 6.16 billion, representing a rise of 13% compared to the previous year. Among the tourists, 0.72 million were from abroad, 11% more than in the previous year.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Diqing is a multi-cultural prefecture with many ethnic minority groups, including Tibetans, the Lisu, the Naxi, the Bai, the Hui, and the Yi. Tibetans account for over 30% of the prefecture's total population.

Shangri-La, named after a fictional valley in the novel Lost Horizon, which was published by British novelist James Hilton 1939, is a county under the administration of Diqing. The high, snowy mountains, endless grasslands, steep, grand gorges, azure lakes and bucolic villages not only leave a deep impression on visitors, but also lend a unique peaceful and mysterious culture to the prefecture.
 
Tourist Attraction
 

Shangri-La, a fascinating land out of this world, is Diqing’s major tourist attraction. Others include Meili Snow Mountain, the most spectacular snow-covered mountain in Yunnan Province, Bita Sea, Mingyong Glacier, Napa Sea, and Baimang Snow Mountain.

Tibetan herbal medicine, folk costumes, and craftworks, woodworks make good souvenirs for tourists.
