Introduction
 

Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture is located in the southwest part of Sichuan Province, bordering Yunnan Province. It covers an area of 60,423 sq km and has a population of 4.7 million.  

Liangshan has four different types of climate. In the subtropical climate zone, the average temperature exceeds 18°C. This area is rich in tropical crops such as bananas, mangoes, pawpaw and sugarcane. Grains and oil are mainly produced in middle and northern subtropical climate zones, while herbal medicine principally grows in the cool, humid temperate zone.

Xichang, the political and economic center of Liangshan, is located along the middle section of the Chengdu-Kunming Railway. From ancient times, Xichang has been an important gateway to the southern Silk Road. It has no bitterly cold winter or extremely hot summer, and has an average temperature of 14.0°C. In addition, Xichang is also an important Satellite Launch Center in China with a spaceport located about 64 km northwest of the city. Sichuan-Yunnan Highway also runs through the city. In addition, Xichang Airport, 13.5 km from the city’s downtown area, offers daily flights to Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province.

 
Economic Features
 
Liangshan realized GDP of RMB 78.4 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 17.5% year on year. The prefecture's GDP accounted for approximately 5.5% of Sichuan's total and ranked eighth in the province. The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 17.2 billion in 2010, accounting for 21.9% of the prefecture's GDP.

In 2010, the value-added output of secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor of the prefecture's economy, amounted to RMB 37.15 billion and accounted for 47.3% of the prefecture's total. The value-added industrial output generated by the industrial sector reached RMB 29 billion, up 25.8.8% year on year. 

Non-ferrous metals, ferrous metals, non-metal materials, building materials and hydro-energy are Liangshan's pillar industries. In 2010, Liangshan produced 51.94 million tons of iron ores, up 35.6% year on year, while the copper output topped 58,700 tons, rising 5.6% from the previous year.

There is a Shanghai-listed company located in Liangshan, namely Sichuan Xichang Electric Power <600505>. It was listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in 2002 and is principally engaged in the generation and distribution of electricity. It realized net profit of RMB 156 million in 2009, representing a healthy increment of 125% compared to the previous year.   

In 2010, the service sector generated value-added output of RMB 24.1.billion, contributing 30.8% of the prefecture's GDP.

The prefecture's export value amounted to US$37.92 million in 2010, representing a increase of 27.34% year on year. Steel, iron alloy, silicon metal, machinery and electronic products and deep processing foods are the major export goods of Liangshan. ASEAN member nations and the U.S. are major export destinations of Liangshan.

Tourism is the most important pillar of Liangshan's service sector. In 2010, 17.72 million tourists visited the prefecture, up 18.1% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 6.47 billion, representing a rise of 23.9% over last year.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture is home to the largest population of the Yi ethnic group in China. The only social development patterns museum, Liangshan Yi Slave Society Museum, is located in the prefecture.

The unique Zouhun Marriage Custom of the Mosuo People and the Torch Festival, a sacrificial ceremony of the Yi people, add to the mystery of Liangshan.

The prefecture is known for its revolutionary history. Liu Bocheng, famous general of the Red Army, once allied with the headman of the Yi people here.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Liangshan is a beautiful and mysterious tourism base in Sichuan. Tourists should visit the  Qiong Sea, Lugu Lake, Dafengding Panda Natural Reserve, Mulida Temple, Yihai Alliance Relics, and the Liangshan Yi Slave Society Museum.

Local Yi folk custom, folk finery and folk song and dance will profoundly impress tourists from all over the world.

When it comes to local special snacks of Liangshan, Tuotuo Meat, which is a salty meat with traditional Yi flavorings, roast little pig, Guangguang Liquor, Sauerkraut Soup and Jianchang Pressed Salted Duck can be good choices for tourists.
