Introduction
Fuxin is located in the northwestern part of Liaoning Province. It covers an area of 10,355 sq km. The population of the city amounted to 1.9 million by the end of 2007. The Mongol ethnic group accounts for approximately 11% to the city's total population.
Fuxin has a temperate semi-dry continental monsoon climate. The average temperature is 7.6 Celsius while the average annual precipitation reaches approximately 481 mm.
Fuxin, which was rich in coal resources in 1960s, has exhausted its coal, and was established as a trial city for economic transformation by the State Council in 2001.
Transportation in Fuxin is very convenient. State Highway 101, State Highway 304, the Shenyang-Fuxin Expressway and the Fuxin-Jinzhou Expressway run through the city. Additionally, there are also railways connecting Fuxin with surrounding prefecture-level cities such as Shenyang, Jinzhou, and Liaoyang. Fuxin is 110 km from Jinzhou Port and 200 km from Yingkou Port.
Economic Features
Fuxin realized GDP of RMB 19.6 billion in 2007, representing a rise of 17.3% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 1.8% of Liaoning's total and ranked last out of fourteen prefecture-level cities in the province.
The agricultural sector generated value-added industrial output of RMB 4.4 billion in 2007, accounting for 22.3% of the city's GDP. Output of grain amounted to 1.8 million tons, contributing 9.6% to the province's total.
In 2007, the value-added output of secondary industry (industry and construction) amounted to RMB 7.3 billion and accounted for 37.3% of the city's total.
The industrial sector realized value-added industrial output of RMB 6.2 billion, up 19.0% year on year, while value-added industrial output of industrial enterprises with designated size or above increased by 22.1% to RMB 4.5 billion, contributing 72.1% to the industrial sector's total. Heavy and light industries with designated size or above realized value-added industrial output of RMB 3.6 billion and RMB 907 million, contributing 79.9% and 20.1% to the total, respectively.
Coal-fired power, food processing, textiles and garments, chemicals, non-metal mineral products manufacturing, and equipment manufacturing are the pillar industries of Fuxin. As a whole, they realized value-added industrial output of RMB 3.9 billion, contributing 86.9% to the total generated by the industrial enterprises with designated size or above.
In 2007, the service sector generated value-added industrial output of RMB 7.9 billion, contributing 40.4% of the city's GDP.
Tourism is important for the city's service sector. During 2007, 2.4 million tourists visited the city, up 79.3% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 1.2 billion, rising 80.6% compared to the previous year.
The city's foreign trade amounted to US$101 million in 2007, representing a healthy increase of 121.2% compared to the previous year. Exports soared 124.4% to US$90.6 million, while imports increased by 95.3% to US$9.9 million.
In 2007, Fuxin contracted 18 foreign invested programs with US$70.3 million worth of contracted foreign investment, representing a rise of 110.7% year on year, while utilized FDI rose 36.7% to US$25.2 million.
Cultural Highlights
Fuxin once had a unique aboriginal civilization. As early as 7,000 years ago, there were people living in this area. Chahai Ancient Human Remains, found in Fuxin, was appraised as the First Village in China.
In addition, Fuxin is also the eastern center of Tibetan Buddhism. Ruiying Temple, a key cultural landmark under provincial protection, was built in the typical Tibetan style.
Zhang Sanfeng, the most famous Taoist Master and one of the initiators of Taiji Gongfu in the Ming Dynasty, was born in Fuxin.
Tourist Attractions
Fuxin is rich in historical landmarks such as Shengjing Temple, which is a Mongolian Lamaism Temple, Ruiying Temple, Qingzhen Temple, Chahai Ruins, Yizhou Town Ruins, and Haitang Mountain Cliff Figures. Fuxin's scenery spots include Daqinggou Reservoir Scenic Area, Namusilai Nature Reserve, Fuxin People's Park, and Lilac Sea.
Qinggou Fish Feast and Mongolian Pie, which is made of buckwheat flour, cattle and sheep meat, and which has a history of over 300 years, are very popular among local people.
