Xilinguole League is located in the middle part of China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, bordering the Republic of Mongolia to the north. The city covers a land area of 263,953 sq km, accounting for 16.4% of Inner Mongolia's total. Its population is 1.0 million.
Xilinguole League belongs to temperate arid continental monsoon climate. The average annual temperature is 1-2°C, while the average annual precipitation is 150-400 mm.
Xilinguole League has various natural resources. High-quality natural grassland areas amount to 180,000 km², accounting for almost one fifth of Inner Mongolia's total. Xilinguole is also rich in mineral resources such as petroleum, natural soda, salt, and limestone. Proven reserves of coal total 139.3 billion tons, 20.6% of Inner Mongolia's total.
Xilinguole has convenient access to transportation. Xilinguole Airport is located west of the downtown area. It operates flights to nearby major cities such as Beijing, and Hohhot. Two trunk railways, namely, the Jining-Erenhot and Jining-Tongliao railways, run through the league and the counties under its jurisdiction. The Jining-Erenhot Railway connects to the railways of Mongolia and extends to Europe countries. State Highway 207, State Highway 208 and State Highway 303 run across Xilinguole and extend to Zhangjiakou, Chifeng, and Erenhot, which is an important land port city under the jurisdiction of the league.
Economic Features
Xilinguole realized GDP of RMB 48.5 billion in 2009, representing a rise of 21.5% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 5% of Inner Mongolia's total.
In 2009, the value-added output of secondary industry (industry and construction) amounted to RMB 31.6 billion, accounting for 65.2% of the city's total.
Xilinguole’s pillar industries are energy, metal ores, chemicals, building materials and meat processing. They realized value-added industrial output of RMB 23.7 billion, contributing 88.2% to the industrial sector’s total.
The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 11.7 billion, accounting for 24% of the city's total GDP in 2009.
During 2009, 5.75 million tourists visited the city, up 30% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 6.5 billion, increasing 28% compared to the same period of last year.
There are two land port cities, namely Erenhot and Zhuengadabuqi, under the administration of Xilinguole League. In 2009, total foreign trade of the league amounted to US$885 million (comprising export value of US$136 million and import value of US$749 million), representing an increase of 14.6% year on year. The major export goods of the league are coke, asphalt, chemicals, iron and steel, while key import goods include timber, copper powder, coal, crude oil, and fertilizer. The Republic of Mongolia and Russia are the league’s major trading partners.
Cultural Highlights
Xilinguole is a multi-ethnic area that is home to Mongols, Daur, Evenki, Oroqen and Russians. They live harmoniously and retain their cultural legacy and life practices. Mongols account for approximately 30% of the population.
Traditional entertainments of the local Mongol people include horse racing, wrestling, archery, music and dance.

Xilinguole boasts beautiful and unique scenery. Tourists should visit the state-level Xilinguole Nature Reserve, the Mongol Culture Court, the Dinosaur Museum, and the Beizi Temple. Moreover, there are a lot of themed tourism programs attracting tourists all over the world.
In Xilinguole, traditional Mongol foods such as milk tea, roast whole lamb, and Mongolian Baozi are very popular.
