Alasan League is located in the west part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, bordering the Republic of Mongolia to the north. The city covers an area of 270,200 sq km, accounting for 22.6% of Inner Mongolia's total. Its population is 0.22 million.
Alasan League has a typical continental climate with four distinct seasons and a big temperature difference between day and night. Annual average temperature is 6-8.5°C. Desert areas extend over 78,000 sq km, accounting for 29% of the league's total.
Alasan League is replete with various mineral and tourism resources. Reserves of anthracite, lake salt, granite, and Iceland spar rank the first among cities of Inner Mongolia. State-level Helan Mountain Nature Reserve and the endless deserts attract tourists from all over the world.
Transportation around Alasan mainly relies on highways. State Highway 110 runs across the league and through counties under its administration.
Economic Features
Alasan realized GDP of RMB 30.59 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 19.9% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 3.4% of Inner Mongolia's total and ranked twelfth in the autonomous region.
Value-added output of secondary industry (industry and construction) was RMB 24.8 billion, accounting for 81% of the league's total. The industrial sector generated value-added output of RMB 23.37 billion, representing a rise of 26.7% year on year. Major industrial products include coke, cement, pig iron, dyes, dehaired cashmere and coal.
Shanghai-listed Inner Mongolia Lantai Industrial<600328>, principally engaged in the manufacture and sale of salt and salt chemicals, is located in Alasan. In 2009, it reported a net profit of RMB 32.55 million.
The service sector contributed 16% of the city's total GDP in 2010. Transportation, storage and postal industries generated value-added industrial output totaling RMB 700 million, up 15.5% year on year.
During 2010, 1.74 million tourists visited the league, 19.75% more than in the previous year, and tourism income was RMB 1.1 billion, up 37.5% compared to the previous year.
In 2009, utilized FDI reached US$5.8 million, increasing by 8.6% year on year. The league's total foreign trade of league amounted to US$438.97 million (comprising export value of US$45.43 million and import value of US$393.54 million), up 236% year on year. The major export goods of the league are sodium metal, ferroalloy, dehaired cashmere, and edible salt, while the key import good is coal. The Republic of Mongolia is the major trading partner of the league.
In 2008, Ceke Port, a land port on the border between China and Mongolia, generated total export and import value of US$26.3 million, 11 times as that of 2007.
Cultural Highlights
Alasan is the birthplace of ancient culture in northern China. The Mandela Mountain Rock Paintings and the Helanshang Mountain Rock Paintings reflect the culture and lives of the ancient nomadic people who lived in Alasan. The Hecheng Town Ruins were an important military stronghold during the Han, Tang, Xixia and Yuan Dynasties. The world-famous Silk Road also extended across the city.
In the 17th Century, a tribe of Mongols, the Tuerhute, after much difficulty contrived to come back from the Volga River region and settle in this area.
It is currently a multicultural city with 24 ethnic minority groups, including Mongols and Hui. They live together harmoniously and retain their cultural legacy and life practices.
Tourist Attraction
Alasan boasts beautiful and unique scenery. Tourists should visit the Moon Lake, which is a AAAAA state-level scenery spot (the highest level in China), the towering Helan Mountain and the endless deserts.
There are three deserts in Alasan, namely the Badanjilin Desert, the Tengeli Desert and the Ulanbuh Desert. Badanjilin is the second largest desert in China.
In Alasan, traditional Mongol foods such as milk tea and roast lamb are very popular.
