Introduction
Located in the northwest of Fujian Province, Wuyishan is a county-level city which focuses on tourism. It gets its name from one of its mountains, Wuyishan Mountain, which is one of China's ten most famous mountains.
Wuyishan has a mild and wet climate, without significant temperature changes during its four seasons. The average annual temperature and rainfall are 17.6 Celsius and 1,864 mm respectively.
Wuyishan has one airport which is 7 km away from downtown. Its annual throughput of passengers is 420,000.
Economic Features
Agriculture and manufacturing industries accounted for 49.0% of Wuyishan's GDP in 2007. This year, the industrial output of Wuyishan reached RMB 1.9 billion, up 40.6% over 2006. Pillar manufacturing industries of this city include wood processing, food processing, garment and mining.
Wuyishan's GDP depends mainly on its service industry with tourism being its pillar component. In 2007, the revenue from tourism reached RMB 2.3 billion, up 24.3% from 2006, of which revenue from foreign tourists was US$36.4 million, up 21.4%.
There were altogether 5.4 million tourists, a growth of 22.6% over 2006. Of these, 0.2 million were foreign visitors.
Cultural Highlights
Wuyishan has a long history that goes back 4,000 years and thus it has an abundance of cultural heritage sites. 2,000 years ago, it became a city of Minyue State during China's Han Dynasty, as well as the state's economic and cultural center. Wuyishan's history boasts of many famous poets and philosophers, including Zhu Xi, a well-known philosopher on Confucianism.
Tourist Attractions
Reputed as "the most attractive mountain in southeast China", Wuyishan Mountain is famous for its cliffs and streams. Remarkable features on this mountain include 36 peaks, 72 caves, 99 outstanding rock formations and 108 scenic spots. The renowned Stream with Nine Turnings is emerald green and crystal clear. Besides natural scenery, Wuyishan's historical sites are also worth seeing, such as the Ziyang Academy of Classical Learning, the Tomb of Zhu Xi and the cliffside sculptures.
Wuyishan Mountain is famed for its "mountain food" ranging from animal delicacies, to fungus and bamboo dishes. The most famous ones are Shilin frogs and various snake dishes, often cooked with fungus or bamboo. The mountain is also famed for its variety of locally-produced wines.
