Introduction

The Beijing Miyun Economic Development Zone (Beijing Miyun EDZ), formerly known as Beijing Miyun Industrial Park, was set up in 1992. It won approval to be a municipality-level development zone from the Beijing Municipal Government in 2000, covering a planned area of 3.5 km2. Beijing, as the capital city of China, was ranked the second-largest economy in mainland China in terms of GDP in 2007.

The zone is situated in Miyun County in the north-eastern part of Beijing, 65 km from the city center of Beijing. The zone is adjacent to Beijing-Miyun Road and Beijing-Chengde Highway. Beijing Capital International Airport and Tianjin port are located 40 km and 160 km away from the zone respectively. Beijing Capital International Airport was ranked the largest airport in terms of passenger throughput in 2007, while Tianjin Port, the largest port in North China, handled 309 million tons of cargo and 7.1 million TEUs in 2007 respectively.

Beijing Miyun EDZ enjoys the rich talent resources in Beijing. There are eighty-three universities and colleges in Beijing, with the number of graduates amounting to 139,000 in 2007.

Investment Climate

Miyun County realized GDP of RMB 9.5 billion in 2007, comprising 1.1% of Beijing's GDP. The agriculture, industry and service sectors contributed 13.6%, 42.5% and 43.9% to Miyun's GDP separately.

Beijing Miyun EDZ consists of a high-tech electronic information base, a bio-engineering and pharmaceuticals base, a textiles-processing base, an auto parts-manufacturing base and a green food-processing base. It encourages investments in electronics, auto parts, food processing, pharmaceuticals and auto parts industries.

In 2007, the zone attracted US$154 million in contractual foreign investments and the utilized FDI reached US$169 million. The major investors in the zone include Futian Auto, Yili, Hualong Group, Taizi Group, NUCTECH, Renchuang and Huayuan.

Beijing Huayuan Renji Pharmaceuticals Logistics Park, invested in by Anhui-based Huayuan Group and Beijing Miyun EDZ Group, was inaugurated in 2006 in the zone. Total investment in the park exceeded RMB 100 million. Covering a construction area of 30,000 m2, the logistics park is capable of storing 25,000 types of pharmaceuticals.

Beijing Mando Auto Under-chassis Co. Ltd., set up in 2003, was invested in by Korea-based Mando with a total investment value of US$28.7 million. The annual production capacity of this firm is over 150,000 sets of automobile under-chassis.
