Introduction

Established in 2006 by the Beijing Municipal Government, Beijing Tianzhu Airport Economic Development Zone (Beijing Tianzhu Airport EDZ) is located in Tianzhu Town of Shunyi District, to the west of Beijing Capital International Airport, 2 km from the terminal building, and adjacent to Beijing Tianzhu Export Processing Zone (Beijing Tianzhu EPZ). It is a city-level park.

The EDZ consists of two zones, Zone A and Zone B. Zone A is located to the south of Beijing Tianzhu EPZ while Zone B is to the west of it.

Beijing Tianzhu EPZ is situated in Beijing Airport City, which has a population of 200,000. It is 25 km from the city center of Beijing, 120 km from Tianjin and 170 km from Tianjin Port.

In 2007, the passenger and cargo throughputs of Beijing Airport reached 53.6 million and 1.4 million tons, ranking first and second in China respectively. The airport has flights to ninety-six domestic cities and ninety-one overseas destinations.

Tianjin Port is the main passageway for cargo from Beijing, North and Northwest China entering the Bohai Sea. In 2007, the port's cargo throughput reached 309 million tons, ranking fourth in China (after Shanghai, Ningbo and Guangzhou) and sixth in the world.

Beijing is now the largest education center in China. By the end of 2007, there were eighty-three universities and colleges in Beijing, with a total enrolment of 568,000. The nation's most famous universities are located in Beijing. They include Peking University and Tsinghua University, dubbed China's Harvard and MIT respectively.

Investment Climate

In 2007, the GDP of Shunyi District reached RMB 35.5 billion, up 21.6% over 2006, and accounting for 3.9% of the city's total. Foreign companies are a major driving force behind the manufacturing sector, which had an industrial output that accounted for 77.3% of the district's total.

The EDZ is close to the airport. Cargo can be delivered to the airport within ten minutes. The EDZ's pillar industries are electronics and information technology, biopharmaceuticals, warehousing and logistics.

To date, over 320 companies from twenty countries and regions have established businesses in the EDZ, with a total investment of more than RMB 40 billion. Sixty-four are multinationals, including twenty-one enterprises from Fortune 500. They include P&G, Airbus, Ericsson, Sony, Philips and Fisher.

Airbus has three projects in the EDZ, with total investments of US$95 million. Its major businesses in the EDZ include aviation support and training, as well as R&D. Its R&D Center was jointly set up with China National Aviation Corp (Group 2) in 2006, with an investment of US$15 million.

Beijing LG-Philips Electronics was founded in 1995, with an investment of US$18.1 million. Its major products are the deflection coils used in televisions and monitors. Presently, its annual output has exceeded 5 million coils.

Beijing Hanmi Pharmaceuticals is China's first investment from South Korea in the pharmaceutical industry. It was jointly set up by South Korea's Hanmi Group and Beijing Zizhu Pharmaceuticals in 1996, with an investment of US$8 million.
