Introduction
The Beijing Daxing Economic Development Zone (Beijing Daxing EDZ), formerly Beijing Daxing Industrial Zone, was established in 1992. It won approval from the Beijing Municipal Government to be a municipality-level development zone in 2000, with a designated size of 4.2 km2. The zone is located in Daxing District in the south-eastern part of Beijing. As the capital city of China, Beijing has realized GDP of over RMB 900 billion, and is the second-largest economy among all the cities in mainland China.
Daxing EDZ is within half an hour's drive to the city center of Beijing. The zone is adjacent to the Beijing-Kaifeng Highway to the east and Beijing-Shijiazhuang Highway to the west. It takes merely forty minutes to drive from Beijing Daxing EDZ to Beijing Capital International Airport, which was ranked the largest airport on the mainland in terms of passenger throughput in 2007. Tianjin Port, the largest port in northern China in terms of cargo traffic and container throughput in 2007, is within ninety minutes' drive from the zone. Beijing Daxing EDZ is merely 1.5 km from Huangcun Railway Distribution Center, which has an annual handling capability of 14 million tons of cargo.
Beijing has rich talent resources. There are eighty-three universities and colleges in Beijing, including prominent universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Central University of Finance and Economics. In 2007, the number of graduates reached 139,000.
Investment Climate
Daxing's GDP grew 14.7% from the previous year to RMB 19.4 billion, comprising 2.2% of Beijing's total. The manufacturing industry is the major industry in Daxing; the gross industrial output above designated size from the manufacturing industry accumulated to RMB 5 billion in 2007, nearly one fifth of Daxing's total.
Beijing Daxing EDZ encourages investments in machinery, electronics and garments industries. Nearly five-hundred firms had set up in the zone by 2007, ninety-six of which had commenced operation. During the period of January to September, 2007, the gross industrial output value in the zone amounted to RMB 1.8 billion. The export value of industrial products exceeded RMB 276 million in the same period.
The major investors in the zone include Vicutu, Beijing Shougang Severa, Tengshi Garments, Renming Electronic Appliances, Bode Transportation, Kangsen Machinery, Gong Yi Fu, Jie Ao and China Railway (Group) Materials. The total gross industrial output from these nine firms grew 33.2% year-on-year to RMB 946 million in the first three quarters of 2007, accounting for 53.8% of that of Daxing EDZ in the same period.
Beijing Shougang Savera Elevator Guide Rail Co. Ltd. was jointly set up in 1999 by Spain-based Savera and Shougang Group, one of the leading steel-makers in China. The firm manufactures and distributes elevator systems and provides related services. Its main customers include OTIS, ThyssenKrupp, Hitachi and Panasonic.
