General Background

Anhui has a total area of 139,427 square kilometers. Total population stood at 59.5 million in 2010. It lies in the hinterland of Yangtze River Delta. Among many rivers and lakes in Anhui, Chaohu Lake(巢湖)is one of the five great freshwater lakes in China, with an area of 800 square kilometers.

The land in Anhui Province is very fertile and suitable for various kinds of crops. The province is also rich in mineral resources. There are 138 kinds of minerals which have already been identified. Among them, 38 kinds rank the top 10 in the whole country, and coal, iron, copper, sulphur and alunite are regarded as the five major minerals.

Industries

In the past ten years, tertiary developed rapidly, replacing the primary to be the 2nd largest industry. In terms of composition of the tertiary industry, wholesale& retail trade, transportation, storage & postal services are the two leading sectors, accounting for 21.2% and 12.6% respectively of the tertiary value-added.

Anhui’s industry is dominated by heavy industry, which accounted for 72% of the valued-added industrial output in 2010.

Tourism

Anhui has abundant tourism resources. It has 10 state-level scenic spots, including Yellow Mountain(黃山), Jiuhua Mountain(九華山), Tianzhu Mountain(天柱山), Langya Mountain(琅玡山), etc. There are not only beautiful natural sceneries, but also cultural relics relating to Buddhism(佛教)and Taoism(道教). The local Hui culture(徽文化)are time-honored.

In 2010, Anhui received 153.5 million (+25.1%) domestic tourists with tourism receipts of RMB109.5 billion (+26.7%). It also attracted 2 million (+27.1%) overseas tourists with foreign exchange revenue of US$820.3 million (+45.0%). The total number of tourists from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan increased by 38.7% to 810 thousand.

Foreign Trade

Major exports included mechanical & electrical products, new and high-tech products, rolled steel and motor vehicles and chassis. Major imports were metal ore & metal waste material, special industrial machinery, etc. Major import sources were Chile, Australia, Japan and US.

Foreign Investment

In recent years, Anhui has performed well in attracting FDI. Both the contracted amount and utilised amount of FDI grew steadily. Its utilised FDI grew by 29.1% to US$ 5 billion in 2010.

In 2010, FDI mainly went to the manufacturing and real estate sectors, accounting for 62.4% and 13.7% of the total utilised FDI respectively.

Hong Kong is the largest source of foreign direct investment in Anhui. In 2010, Hong Kong investors signed 119 contracts (42.3% of the total) with contracted FDI amounted to US$1,184 million (54.7% of the total). The utilised FDI from Hong Kong amounted to US$2,339 million (46.6% of the total) in 2010. Other major investors included the US and Singapore.

Consumer Market

In 2010, retail sales of consumer goods rose by 19.2% to RMB415.2 billion. Major consumer markets are located in Hefei, Anqing, Fuyang and Wuhu. In 2010, annual per capita disposal income of urban households reached RMB15,788 (+12.1%).

Increasing income transforms the consumer expenditure structure with a smaller share on food but a bigger share on services. The retail landscape is also changing with the uprising of various forms of chain stores, supermarkets, hypermarkets and convenience stores. Major retail operators include Gome, Wal-mart and Carrefour. Joy Mart(合家福)is one of the successful local operators.
