Introduction Located in Baotou, the largest industrial city in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the Baotou National Rare-Earth High-Tech Industrial Development Zone (Baotou NREHTIDZ) was established in November, 1990, and approved by the State Council in November, 1992, as a state-level development zone.

Baotou NREHTIDZ has a well-developed traffic network; it is a mere 6 km away from the train station, and a further 16 km from the Baotou Erliban airport.
Investment Climate In 2010, the GDP of the zone amounted to RMB 22.74 billion, accounting for 9.2% of city’s total. As of the end of 2010, the zone had 2476 registered enterprises, among which, 54 are high-tech enterprises, accounting for 93% of city’s total.

The three major industries are rare earth metals, aluminum bronze and electrical- and mechanical-manufacturing. The total industrial output of these three industries accounted for about three-quarters of the total of that from the enterprises of the designated size and above in the city.

In 2008, the output of rare-earth permanent magnet material accounted for 6% of China’s total, while output of hydrogen storage material and polishing material accounted for 9.8% and 30% of the country’s totals, respectively.
