Introduction Beijing Mafang Economic Development Zone (Beijing Mafang EDZ), formerly known as Pinggu Mafang Industrial Zone, was approved as a municipal-level development zone by the Beijing municipal government in 2006. It has an area of 9.1 sq km.

Beijing Mafang EDZ is located southwest of Pinggu District at the intersection of Beijing and Sanhe in Hebei Province. The zone is 6 km from State Highway 102, which runs from Beijing to Shuangcheng in Heilongjiang Province, 10 km from Daqin Railway, which runs from Datong in Shanxi Province to Qinhuangdao in Hebei Province, and 35 km from Beijing Capital International Airport. Miyun-Sanhe Road runs through the zone, while Tianjin Port lies 130 km to the east of the zone.

In 2010, Beijing Airport’s passenger throughput reached 73.9 million, ranking first in China, and second in the world. The airport offers flights to 96 domestic cities and 91 overseas cities.

Tianjin Port is the main passageway for cargo from Beijing and North and Northwest China entering the Bohai Sea. In 2010, the port’s cargo throughput reached 400 million tons, ranking third in China after Shanghai and Ningbo.

Beijing is now the largest educational center in China. By the end of 2010, there were 89 universities and colleges in Beijing, with a total enrollment of 578,000. The nation’s most well-known universities are located in Beijing. They include Peking University and Tsinghua University, dubbed China’s Harvard and MIT, respectively.
Investment Climate Beijing Mafang EDZ encourages investment in construction materials, pharmaceuticals, electronics and other high-tech industries.

By the end of 2008, 42 companies had invested in the zone. They generated total revenue of RMB 743.8 million in 2008.

Beijing Electrical Control Science Park is located within Beijing Mafang EDZ. A total of RMB 2.8 billion will be invested in the park, which will have an area of 900,000 sq m. The zone started construction in 2008 and will be developed in cooperation with Zhongguancun Science Park and the government of Pinggu District.

Major investors in the science park include Fule Kangda, YFY, BOE Technology, Jile, BBEF, and C&W Technology. Jile Electronics and BOE Technologies launched display production lines in the zone. Jile Electronics, set up in 1996 in Beijing Mafang EDZ, is a manufacturer of LED optoelectronic products and telecom products. Beijing-based BOE Technologies, established in 1993, is a supplier of display devices and solutions.
