Dongxing City, which is located in the southwest of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, shares a 33 km borderline with Vietnam. The city is 178 km away from Nanning, the capital of the region, and 308 km from Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.
Dongxing has always been an important border town and trading port for China, by virtue of its favorable geographical location – it is the only port linking China and the ASEAN countries by both land and water.

In 2008, Dongxing realized RMB 3.02 billion worth of GDP, a rise of 37.7% year–on-year. The city’s GDP per capita amounted to RMB 26,034, ranking among the top three in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Within the same year, Dongxing’s total secondary industrial output reached RMB 1.73 billion, a growth of 35.4% year-on-year. GDP of the secondary industry, which accounts for 25.1% of the total, surpassed the GDP of the primary industry.
Other highlights of the city’s economy include its foreign trade, its buoyant private economy and tourism. The city's total foreign trade in 2008 amounted to US$302 million, representing an increment of 4.42% from 2007. In 2008, the retail sales and contracted value of the merchandise fairs amounted to RMB 33.4 million and RMB 85 million, respectively. In addition, the tourism industry generated RMB 373 million in revenue, and a total of 1.29 million domestic and foreign tourists have visited the city.

| Cultural Highlights |

Dongxing was once a flourishing port in South China, trading primarily with Southeast Asia, France, Britain, the U.S. and Japan between the 1920s and 1940s. During that time, the streets were paved with numerous companies, shops, restaurants, hotels, gambling houses and brothels, earning itself the nickname of "Little Hong Kong" in those days.
