Since the Song Dynasty, Pingxiang has been an important port along the Silk Road in Southern China. The city also played an important role in Sino-Vietnamese border trade and defense in ancient times.

Tourist Attraction

Among all the ports of trade between China and Vietnam, the Friendship Pass in Pingxiang is the most important.

The pass was formerly named Zhennan (South Pacification) Pass, and was one of nine important passes in ancient China. It was there that the army of the Qing Dynasty won a great victory in the Sino-French War, and where Dr. Sun Yat-sen led an uprising against the Qing government. The historical value of the pass makes it a key attraction to tourists.
