Introduction

Beihai, called Bakhoi in Cantonese, is a prefecture-level city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, located in the southwest of China. The city, lying on the northeastern bank of Beibu Gulf, is well-known for being an excellent tourist city. The climate in Beihai is very pleasant: sufficient sunlight, abundant rainfall, luxuriant plants, green grass and beautiful flowers flourish in its fresh air.

It is a hub city connecting the southwest of China to Southeast Asia. Transportation to and from the city – by sea, road or air - is fast and convenient. In addition, the exit procedure for sea travel from Beihai to Xialong in Vietnam has recently been simplified, making it more convenient to travel to Vietnam.

Economic Features

Beihai realized RMB 33.5 billion worth of GDP in 2009. This represents an increase of 16% year-on-year, accounting for about 4.4% of the province’s total. In the same year, the value-added output of the secondary industry and service industry accounted for 22.8% and 343.0% of the city's total respectively.

Beihai’s total foreign trade reached US$711 million in 2008, a rise of 42.4% from 2007. Hong Kong, Macau and ASEAN countries are its main trading partners.

Freightage by road and by water amounted to 37 million tons and 4.9 million tons in 2008 respectively, signaling a growth of 12.91% and 35.05% year-on-year. Passenger’s road and waterway traffic volume reached 41.9 million people and0.8 million people, increasing by 2.74% and 16.6% respectively from a year earlier.

In terms of industries that are above designated scale, the gross industrial output of Beihai’s electronic information industry amounted RMB 10 billion in 2009, accounting for 42.4% of the city's total.

Beihai’s tourism industry also accounts for a substantial part of the city’s revenue. It had realized revenue of RMB 5.2 billion from domestic travelers, marking a rise of 36.2% from the previous year. A total of 8.2 million domestic tourists and 61,400 foreign inbound tourists visited Beihai in 2009. This represents an increase of 17.4% and 10.3% over the corresponding period last year.

Cultural Highlights

2,000 years ago, Beihai was one of two harbors from which many adventurers left China for the famous 'Maritime Silk Road' travels. Beihai has also experienced a long history of being open to tourists. This has contributed to the large number of international tourists visiting the city. Many people, both locals and foreigners, choose to live in Beihai.

Tourist Attraction

Beihai boasts a plethora of tourist attractions. From scenic landscapes  displaying modern gardening techniques (such as the Beibu Gulf Square, Silver Beach, Weizhou Island and Xingdao Lake) to man-made cultural artifacts (such as the Dongpo Pavilion and the Wenchang Pagoda), a tourist is never left without anything to do. Many national tourist resorts can also be found in Beihai.

Dining in Beihai is also a key attraction for many tourists. Due to its proximity to the seafood market located on its shoreline, fresh fish, shrimp, shellfish and crab are readily available, making seafood a popular dining option for tourists. Besides that, Beihai has a wide variety of cuisines being served up at its restaurants, including many types of western-style dining.

Major Development Zones

By the end of 2010, there were two state-level development zones in Beihai, namely Beihai Export Processing Zone and Beihai Yintan National Tourism and Holiday Resort.
