Dingxi is located in the middle part of Gansu Province, in the upper reach of the Yellow River. It covers an area of 20,300 sq km. Population of the city amounted to 2.9 million by the end of 2010.
Dingxi has a temperate semi-dry climate with plenty of sunshine and large temperature difference between day and night. Average temperature of the city is 5.5-7.5?. Average annual precipitation is approximately 500 mm, while average annual evaporation amounts to 1,500 mm.
Dingxi is rich in natural resources. There are more than 300 various traditional herbal medicines can be found in the city. Dingxi realized GDP of RMB 15.6billion in 2010, representing a rise of 10.5% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 3.9% of Gansu's total and ranked twelfth out of fourteen prefecture-level cities in Gansu province.
The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 4.77 billion in 20010, accounting for 31% of the city's GDP. Grain output of Dingxi totaled 1.19 million tons in 2010, accounting for 19.9% of the province's total.
In 2010, secondary industry (industry and construction), the smallest contributor to the city's economy, realized value-added industrial output of RMB 3.92 billion, accounting for 25% of the city's total.
During 2010, value-added industrial output of industrial sector amounted to RMB 2.46 billion, while total value-added industrial output of the enterprises above designated size reached RMB 1.3 billion, accounting for approximately 52.8% of industrial sector's total. Heavy and light industries realized value-added industrial output of RMB 748 million and RMB 548 million, contributing 57.5% and 42.2% respectively to the total generated by enterprises above designated size.
Aluminum processing, chemicals, equipment manufacturing and pharmaceuticals are pillar industries of the city. Local representative enterprises of these pillars include Northwestern Aluminum Processing Co., which is the subsidiary company of the Aluminum Corporation of China<601600>, Gansu Longxi Kaihua Chemicals, principally engaged in manufacturing of calcium carbide and ferroalloy products, Taohe Tractor Manufacturing Co Ltd, which realized sales revenue of RMB 13.8 million from January to August in 2008, and Dingxi Fuzheng Pharmaceuticals, mainly engaged in Chinese herbal extraction.
The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 6.91 billion, accounting for 44% of the city's total GDP in 2010.
Cultural Highlights
With more than 2,200 years of history, Dingxi is an important cultural centre in China. Many cultural relics of the Neolithic Age have been discovered in the city. The flourishing region is an importance site on the Silk Road. After the establishment of the PRC, Dingxi Special District was set up and changed into Dingxi Region in 1970. In 2003, it became the Dingxi City.
The city is a town of folk arts such as carvings, paper cuttings, shadow puppetry, local operas and the most popular style of folk songs.
Tourist Attraction
Tourist attractions of the city include Zheyang Mountain, Guiqing Mountain, Baling Bridge, Weiyuan Tower and Lotus (Lianhua) Mountain.
The Weiyuan Tower is located in the center of the county town. With a platform built of bricks underneath, it has passages under the tower for pedestrians.
Baling Bridge is spanning over the Qingyuan River beyond the southern gate of the Weiyuan County.
In addition, Dingxi is famous as Town of Potato, herbs (astragalus, codonopsis, angelica) and horsebean.
