Jinchang is located in the middle of Gansu Province, at the northern foot of Qilianshan Mountain and bordering Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It covers an area of 8,896 sq km. Population of the city amounted to 0.48 by the end of 2010.
Temperature of Jinchang varies largely with the altitudes. The northern part of the city is dry and hot with plenty of sunshine and average annual precipitation of 120 mm, while the high-altitude southern Jinchang is relatively humid and cold with average annual precipitation of more than 300 mm.
Jinchang is rich in mineral resources. Proven reserves of nickel ore amount to 5.5 million tons, ranking first throughout China, while reserves of copper total to 3.5 million tons, contributing 80% to the province's total. In addition, Jinchang is also rich in solar energy, average annual sunshine reach 2,878.6 hours.
Transportation of Jinchang is very convenient. State Highway 312 (Shanghai-Yining of Xinjiang Autonomous Region), the Provincial Highway 212 and Lanzhou-Urumqi Railway run through the city.
Economic Features
Jinchang realized GDP of RMB 21.05 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 11.34% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 5.8% of Gansu's total.
The agricultural sector, the smallest contributor to the city's economy, generated value-added output of RMB 1.12 billion in 2010, accounting for only 5.3% of the city's GDP.
In 2010, secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor to the city's economy, realized value-added output of RMB 16.7 billion, accounting for 79.3% of the city's total.
During 2010, total value-added industrial output of the enterprises above designated size reached RMB 15.01 billion, accounting for 89% of industrial sector's total. Sales revenue from industrial enterprises with designated size or above level top RMB105.42 billion, rising 44.21% year on year.
Metallurgy, chemicals and building material are pillar industries of the city. Jinchuan Group Limited (JNMC), the largest producer of nickel and cobalt in China, has had an annual production capacity of 130,000 tons of nickel, 200,000 tons of copper, 6,000 tons of cobalt, 8,000 kilograms of platinum group metals (PGMs) and 120,000 tons of chemical products. The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 3.24 billion, accounting for 15.4% of the city's total GDP in 2010.
Cultural Highlights
There were human beings living in the Jinchang area as early as 4,000 years ago. In the Shang Dynasty, it is the herd place of West Rong People. During the Spring-Autumn and War State Period, the Yuch-chih people raising herds in the area. In early Han Dynasty, Jinchang was under the control of Hun Xiutu.
The Chinese People's Liberty Army liberated the area in 1949. In December, 1980, Jinchang became a county-level city belonging to Weiwu region.
Tourist Attraction
Jinchang has cultural sites including the Han and Qing dynasty Great Walls, Drum Tower of Yongchang, the North Haizi Tower. Many tourists are also attracted by the relatively undeveloped natural environment of the city such as snow mountains, plains and pine forests.
Jinchang is important grain and oil base in Gansu. Due to its special climate, beet, watermelon, sunflower seeds, black melon seeds grow well and boast high quality.
