Liuzhou is located in the north of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It covers an area of 18,677 sq km. Its population is 3.7 million. The Zhuang ethnic group account for approximately 18% of the total population.
Liuzhou has a subtropical monsoon climate with plenty of sunshine and rain fall. The average temperature is 20.5°C, while the average annual precipitation is 1400 mm.
Liuzhou is an important transport hub in Guangxi as well as in China. It has a modern network of railways, highways, waterways and air routes. The Liuzhou Bailian Airport, 12km from the downtown area, operates flights to cities including Nanning, Guangzhou, and Beihai.
Four trunk railways, namely, the Hunan-Guangxi Railway, the Guizhou-Guangxi Railway, the Litang-Zhanjiang Railway, the Yatunbao-Liuzhou Railway, the Guilin-Liuzhou Expressway, the Liuzhou-Beihai Expressway and the State Highway 209, the State Highway 322 and the State Highway 323 run through the city and connect middle-south China, East China and South China. In addition, waterways with the capacity to handle 300-500 ton ships are currently under construction.
Economic Features
Liuzhou realized GDP of RMB 103.2 billion in 2009, representing a rise of 16.3% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 13.4% of Guangxi's total and ranked second after Nanning in the autonomous region.
The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 9.0 billion in 2009, accounting for 8.7% of the city's GDP. Secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor to the city’s economy realized value-added output of RMB 63.6 billion, accounting for 61.7% of the city's total.
Liuzhou is the most important industrial city in Guangxi. Automobiles, metallurgy and machinery are the city's pillar industries. In 2009, these industries realized industrial output of RMB 134.4 billion in total, up 22.4% year on year. Their industrial output contributed 66.8% to the industrial sector’s total.
There are four listed companies based in Liuzhou. They are Guangxi Liugong Machinery<000528>, Liuzhou Chemical Industry<600423>, Liuzhou Liangmianzhen<600249>, which is principally engaged in the production and sale of oral hygiene products, washing products and female hygiene products, and Liuzhou Iron & Steel<601003>. Liuzhou Liangmianzhen, realized net profit of RMB 16.67 million in 2009.
The service sector contributed 29.6% of the city's total GDP in 2009. During 2009, 68,000 foreign tourists visited the city, 10.7% more than in the previous year, and foreign tourism income totaled US$24.67 million, increasing 11.2% compared to the previous year.
In 2007, total value of imports and exports amounted to US$1.7 billion (comprising export value of US$443 million and import value of US$1.3 billion), down 14.8% year on year. The city’s major export goods are steel products and mechanical and electrical products. Exports sell primarily to countries in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Cultural Highlights
Liuzhou, also named the Dragon City, is a historical and cultural city with beautiful scenery and 47 various minority groups including the Zhuang, the Miao, the Yao, and the Dong. It is an important ancestral birthplace for South China. Approximately 50,000 years ago, the Liujiang People and the Bailiang Cave People lived in this area.
The city name, Liuzhou, was established during the West Han Dynasty over 2,100 years ago. Liu Zongyuan, a famous and great intellectual of the Tang Dynasty, was assigned to govern Liuzhou and stayed for the rest of his life. The city has always treasured his temple, tomb and some epigraphs.
Liuzhou, as the hometown of Liu Sanjie, a famous and popular folk song singer, is also a place where folk songs are extremely popular. The Zhuang people’s song, the Yao People’s dance, the Miao people’s festivals and the Dong people’s houses are the "Top 4 Uniquenesses of Liuzhou".
Tourist Attraction
Liuzhou city has a lot of attractive landscapes, encircled by green mountains and embraced by Liu Jiang River. Tourists should visit White Lotus Cave, Jianpan Mountain Park, Standing-Fish Peak Scenic Spot, Panlong Park,Liuhou Temple and Dule Scenic Spot. Additionally, Liuzhou is known as the “Stone Capital in China” since the Stones in Liuzhou are the oddest and most unique in all of China.
Luosifen, which is a dish of rice noodles in a spicy broth made from snails, is a very popular local dish in Liuzhou.
