Introduction
 

Wuzhou is located in eastern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, bordering Guangdong Province. It covers an area of 12,583 sq km. Its population is 3.2 million.

Wuzhou has a subtropical monsoon climate with plenty of rain. The average annual temperature is 21.1°C, while the average annual precipitation is 1503.6 mm. The city is flood-prone during April and September every year.

Wuzhou is replete with natural resources. It is a national production base for commodity grain, timber and resin. Forests cover 72.7% of the city’s lands. Reserves of granite total 2.1 billion steres.

Wuzhou is the most important gateway from Guangxi Autonomous Region to Guangdong Province. Transportation around Wuzhou relies on the airport, highways and waterways. The Wuzhou Changzhoudao Airport, 4km from the downtown area, operates flights to cities including Nanning, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Zhuhai. The State Highway 321 and the State Highway 207 intersect in Wuzhou. The Wuzhou-Guilin and the Wuzhou-Guangzhou Expressways also meet here. In addition, Wuzhou is the largest inland river port in Guangxi, and had throughput of 9.5 million tons in 2009, a rise of 61.3% year on year.

 
Economic Features
 
Wuzhou realized GDP of RMB 44.75 billion in 2009, representing a rise of 15.7% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 5.8% of Guangxi's total, and ranked fifth in the autonomous region.

The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 6.9 billion in 2009, accounting for 15.4% of the city's GDP. Secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor to the city’s economy, realized value-added output of RMB 24.66 billion, accounting for 55.1% of the city's total.

Agricultural products processing, ferrous metallurgy, nonferrous metallurgy, electricity and heat supply, wood processing, metal products and equipment manufacturing are the city's pillar industries. In 2009, they realized value-added industrial output of RMB 700 million, RMB 159 million, RMB 167 million, RMB 192 million, RMB 104 million, RMB 763 million and RMB RMB 874 million, up 58.5%, 29.6%, 31.0%, 57.1%, 24.8%, 48.9% and 40.8% year on year, respectively. The value-added industrial output of these industries accounted for 32.2% of the total for the industrial sector.

There is a listed company named Guangxi Wuzhou Zhongheng Group<600252> based in Wuzhou. It is principally engaged in pharmaceuticals manufacturing and real estate development. In the first half of 2010, the company realized net profit of RMB 135 million, up 166.2% year on year.

The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 13.2 billion, contributing 29.5% of the city's total GDP in 2007.

Tourism is an important pillar of Wuzhou. During 2009, 5.6 million tourists visited the city, 14.8% more than in the previous year. Tourism income totaled RMB 3.6 billion, increasing 33.2% compared to the previous year.

In 2009, the total value of imports and exports amounted to US$558 million (comprising export value of US$388 million and import value of US$170 million), up 9.8% year on year. The city’s major export goods are resin and its products. Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Spain and Belgium are the major export destinations of Wuzhou.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Wuzhou is a city with 2,100 years of history. The dominant ethnic group is Han. Additionally, minority groups such as the Zhuang, the Yao, the Hakka, and others also live here. Since Wuzhou is adjacent to Guangdong Province, and belongs to the Cantonese cultural and linguistic region, most people speak a dialect of Cantonese as well as Mandarin.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Wuzhou is rich in tourism resources. There are 250 various scenery and heritage spots located in Wuzhou. They include the Yuanyangjiang River, which has yellow and green water combined together, natural cataracts, the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Snake Park, the largest in Southeast Asia, and Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Site.

Guilingao Jelly, a Chinese medicine made from powdered turtle shell and roots, is really popular and delicious in Wuzhou.
