Anshun is located in the southwestern part of Guizhou Province. It covers an area of 9,267 sq km. Its population was 2.57 million in 2009. Minority ethnic groups account for approximately 39% of the prefecture-level city's population. The Buyi and the Miao are the major minority groups of Anshun.
Anshun has a typical plateau subtropical humid monsoon climate with plenty of rain, and no extremely hot summer or bitter cold winter. The average temperature is 14°C, while the average annual precipitation totals 1,360 mm.
Anshun is replete with mineral resources such as coal, zinc, barium, sulfur, iron ore, fluorite, kaolin, refractory clay, marble, gypsum and limestone. Additionally, Anshun is known for tourism. Huangguoshu Waterfall and Dragon Palace Scenery Area, both located in Anshun, have been given AAAAA ratings, the highest level in China.
Anshun has convenient transportation. The Guiyang-Kunming Railway and State Highway 320 (Shanghai-Ruili) run through the city. Huangguoshu Airport, 6 km from the city’s downtown area, operates scheduled flights to surrounding cities such as Guiyang and Kunming.
Economic Features
Anshun realized GDP of RMB 23.29 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 12.1% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 6% of Guizhou's total and ranked ninth out of nine in the province.
The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 4.04 billion in 2010, accounting for 17.4% of the city's GDP. Secondary industry (industry and construction) realized value-added industrial output of RMB 8.86 billion, accounting for 38% of the city's total.
The industrial sector realized value-added industrial output of RMB 7.64 billion, while value-added industrial output of industrial enterprises with designated size or above increased by 13.6%.
Coal mining, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, non-metallic mineral products and electricity are the pillar industries of the city. These industries realized value-added industrial output of RMB 1.2 billion, RMB 219 million, RMB 270 million, RMB 184 million and RMB 1.5 billion, respectively. As a whole, their value-added industrial output contributed to approximately 62% to the industrial sector's total.
The Shanghai-listed Anshun-based company Guizhou Redstar Developing<600367>, principally engaged in the production and sale of inorganic chemicals and manganese chemicals, realized net profit of RMB 8.3 million in 2009, 74.4% less than in the previous year.
The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 10.39 billion, accounting for 44.6% of the city's total GDP in 2010. Tourism is the most important pillar of the sector.
During 2010, more than 13.24 million tourists visited the city, up 9.7% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 11.28 billion, representing a rise of 12.8% compared to the previous year.
In 2010, the total value of imports and exports amounted to US$130.2 million (comprising export value of US$117.9 million and import value of US$12.3 million), up 10.1% compare to the previous year. The city's major export goods include barium carbonate, aviation parts, and forging products. The U.S., France and Japan are important trading partners of the city.
Cultural Highlights
Anshun is the birthplace of Qianzhong culture. It was one of the most important political, economic and cultural centers of Guizhou and the capital of the ancient Yelang Kingdom early in the Warring States period. In 2000, Anshun was officially designated as a prefecture-level city.
Now, Anshun is a multi-cultural city with many ethnic minority groups, including the Buyi, the Miao, the Gelao, and the Hui. They live together harmoniously and retain their cultural legacy and life practices. Local festivals include the Sanyuesan and Liuyueliu Festivals of the Buyi people, the Siyueba and Spring Festivals of the Miao people, the Harvest Festival of the Yi people and the Chixin Festival of the Gelao people.
Tourist Attraction
Anshun is rich in beautiful natural and cultural tourism resources including Huangguoshu Waterfall, Anshun Dragon Palace, Tianxing Bridge Scenery Area, Zhijin Cave, Hongfeng (red maple) Lake, Wenmiao Temple, Wangruofeng Former Residence, Hongshan Park and Jiulong Mountain Forest Park.
Huangguoshu Waterfall and Anshun Dragon Palace were given a rating of AAAAA, the highest level in China. Jiulong Mountain Forest Park is a national forest park.
When it comes to local dishes, Anshun roasted fish and Xiaoguo Liangfen, which is made of rice jelly, potato and lotus root starch, are really delicious and popular.
