Liupanshui is located in the western part of Guizhou Province. It covers an area of 9,914 sq km. Its population is 2.98 million.
Liupanshui has a subtropical humid monsoon climate with plenty of rain, and no extremely hot summer or bitter cold winter. The average temperature is 19.8-22.0°C, while the average annual precipitation totals 1,200-1,500 mm.
Liupanshui is rich in natural resources. Forests cover 22.5% of the city’s lands. Average annual runoff of the surface water amounts to 6.4 billion steres. In addition, Liupanshui is replete with mineral resources such as coal, iron, lead and zinc. Proven reserves of coal total 16.4 billion tons, ranking first in Guizhou. It is widely appraised as the Southwestern Coal Sea in China.
Liupanshui is one of the railway hub cities in southwestern China. The Liupanshui-Zhuzhou Railway, the Liupanshui-Baiguo Railway, the Neijiang-Kunming Railway and the Guiyang-Kunming Railway start from or run through the city.
Economic Features
Liupanshui realized GDP of RMB 43 billion in 2009, representing a rise of 11.5% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 11% of Guizhou's total and ranked fourth after Guiyang, the capital city of the province, Zunyi and Bijie.
The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 2.6 billion in 2009, accounting for 6.15% of the city's GDP. Secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor to the city’s economy, realized value-added industrial output of RMB 26.1 billion, accounting for 60.75% of the city's total.
The industrial sector realized value-added industrial output of RMB 23.7 billion, up 8.3% year on year, while value-added industrial output of industrial enterprises with designated size or above increased by 4.8% to RMB 17.5 billion, contributing 73.8% to the industrial sector's total..
Coal mining, electricity, iron and steel and building materials are the pillar industries of the city. In 2009, the city produced 5.6 million tons of coal, 3 million tons of steel and 2.8 million tons of pig iron, respectively.
Guizhou Panjiang Refined Coal<600395> is the only Shanghai-listed company based in Liupanshui. It is principally engaged in the mining, processing and sale of coal and in electricity generation. The company realized net profit of RMB 639 million in 2008, more than five times the figure in the previous year.
The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 14.2 billion, accounting for 33.1% of the city's total GDP in 2009. Transportation, warehousing, postal services and telecommunications are pillars of the sector. They realized value-added output of RMB 3.5 billion, contributing 17.6% to the sector's total.
During 2009, 2.9 million tourists visited the city, up 47.3% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 1 billion, representing a rise of 14.09% compared to the previous year.
In 2009, the total value of imports and exports amounted to US$375 million (comprising export value of US$20 million and import value of US$375 million), down 20.7% year on year. The city’s major import good is iron ore, while export goods include steel products, billets and machinery. The U.S., Russia and Australia are important trading partners of the city.
During the same year, utilized FDI amounted to US$7.034 million, rising 23% from the previous year.
Cultural Highlights
Liupanshui boasts a profound history, and is home to ancient human remains. The Ancient Panxian Big Cave People, the Shuicheng People and the Peachblossom Cave People lived in this area more than 200,000 years, 80,000 years and 10,000 years ago, respectively.
Now, Liupanshui is a multi-cultural city with many ethnic minority groups, including the Yi, the Miao and the Buyi. They live together harmoniously and retain their cultural legacy and life practices. Local traditional festivals include the Torch Festival of the Haiping Yi people, the Tiaohuapo Festival of the Nankai Miao people, and the Liuyueliu (Jun 6th) Festival of the Liuzhiba Bay Buyi people.
Tourist Attraction
Liupanshui not only has a profound history and colorful folk culture, but also has beautiful scenery. There are many spectacular karst landforms in Liupanshui, such as the deepest karst vertical silo (which is 424 meters deep) in the world, the biggest diameter karst pit in China (which is 760 meters in diameter and 240 meters deep), and various kinds of canyons, like Beipan river canyon (which is 80 km in length and 1000 meters deep), Liuchehe gorge, Biyun cave, Liangfeng cave and Xingxiu cave.
Among the special local products, Feng pigs (salted little pigs), and traditional Chinese herbal medicine such as Duzhong and Tianma, are famous export goods of Guizhou Province.
In addition, local snacks of Shuicheng (water town) mutton noodles and Luogu (roasted) Potato are really delicious and popular in Liupanshui.
