Hechi is located in the northwestern part of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, bordering Guizhou Province to the north. It covers an area of 33,494 sq km. Its population is 4 million.
Hechi has a subtropical monsoon climate with plenty of sunshine and rain. The average temperature is 16.9-21.5°C, while the average annual precipitation is 1200-1600 mm.
Hechi is rich in mineral resources and is widely known in China as town of non-ferrous metals. Mineral resources such as tin, lead, zinc, antimony, silver, indium, cadmium, sulfur and arsenic are abundant. Reserves of tin and indium amount to 905,500 tons and 4400 tons respectively, both ranking first in China. Moreover, Hechi is also the largest production base of tin and lead in all of China.
In addition, Hechi is also replete with water resources and hydro-energy. Two major rivers, namely Hongshui River and Longjiang River, run across the city. Annual average water resources total 25 billion steres, accounting for 13.3% of Guangxi's total, while the reserve of hydro-energy amounts to 10 million kilowatts, contributing more than half of Guangxi's total.
Transportation in Hechi mainly relies on highways, railways and waterways. State Highway 210 and the Guizhou-Guangxi railway run through the city and connect Guangxi and Guizhou Provinces. In addition, waterways extend upstream to Yunnan and Guizhou Provinces.
Economic Features
Hechi realized GDP of RMB 38.2 billion in 2009, representing a rise of 8.2% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 5.0% of Guangxi's total.
The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 8.3 billion in 2009, accounting for 21.69% of the city's GDP. Secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor to the city’s economy, realized value-added output of RMB 16.5 billion, accounting for 43.3 % of the city's total.
In 2009, the city’s industry sector realized value-added output of RMB 13.6 billion, up 0.3% year on year. Energy, non-ferrous metals mining, equipment manufacturing and agricultural products processing are the pillar industries of the city. In 2009, they realized net profit of RMB 5.8 billion, RMB 893 million, RMB 159 million, and RMB 721 million, respectively.
The service sector contributed 54.5% of the city's total GDP in 2009. During 2009, 5.7 million tourists visited the city, 30.9% more than in the previous year, while tourism income totaled RMB 3.2 billion, increasing 33.8% compared to the previous year.
In 2009, the total value of imports and exports amounted to US$437 million (comprising export value of US$165 million and import value of US$272 million), up 23.98% year on year. The city’s major export goods are non-ferrous metal processing products. The U.S., Australia, and the nations of the ASEAN, are the major trading partners of Hechi.
Cultural Highlights
Hechi is a city with over two thousand years of history. It is an important part of Youjiang Revolutionary Base, where Deng Xiaoping led people to fight for freedom.
Hechi is a multi-ethnic area and home to eight ethnic groups including the Han, the Zhuang, the Yao, the Miao, and the Melao. Local customs and folk arts remain alive and strong.

Hechi is rich in tourism resources. Attractive scenery spots include revolutionary sites such as Liening Rock, Kuixing Pavilion, Red Army Camp and the natural landscapes of Chuanlong Cave Tourism Area, Shima (Stone Horse) Lake Tourism Area, and the Cuiping Mountain. Hechi is replete with herbal medicines such as Shouwu, Shengdi, and Tianqi. In addition, there are a lot of rare odd beasts including Pangolin, musk deer, langurs, and leopards, living the mountain lands around the city.
