Shizuishan is located in the northern part of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, bordering the Yellow River to the northeast and Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia, to the south. The city covers an area of 5,309.5 sq km. Its population is 0.7 million.
Shizuishan has a temperate, dry continental climate with plenty of sunshine, a sandy wind and a big temperature difference between day and night. The average annual temperature is 5-9°C, while the average annual precipitation is 200-600 mm.
Shizuishan is replete with various natural resources. Forests cover 26% of the city’s lands. The proven reserves of coal total 2.2 billion tons. Shahu Lake (Sand Lake) is a state level AAAAA scenic spot (the highest level in China).
The transportation available around Shizuishan is very convenient. Although there is no airport located in the city, Yinchuan Hedong Airport, located in Yinchuan, only 100 km from Shizuishan, operates flights to most major cities. State Highway 109, State Highway 110 and the Shizuishan-Zhongning Expressway run across the city and connect the Ningxia and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Regions.
Economic Features
Shizuishan realized GDP of RMB 23.6 billion in 2008, representing a rise of 14.4% year on year. The city's GDP ranked second after Yinchuan in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
In 2009, value-added output of secondary industry (industry and construction) amounted to RMB 17.1 billion, accounting for 72.4% of the city's total. Value added output from the industrial sector totaled RMB 16.2 billion, up 16% year on year.
Shizuishan’s pillar industries are energy chemicals, new materials and equipment manufacturing. In 2007, these industries realized value-added industrial output of RMB 3.3 billion, 1.1 billion, and 935 million, up 25.9%, 41.4% and 33.2% year on year, respectively. The weight of these industries reached 51.3% of the industrial sector's total.
There are four industrial zones in Shizuishan, namely Shizuishan Economic development Zone, Shizuishan Industrial Park, Pingluo Industrial Park and Shizuishan Circular Economy Trial Area. In 2007, the four industrial zones generated value-added industrial output of RMB 6.3 billion, contributing 64.8% to the city’s total.
There are three listed companies located in Shizuishan. Ningxia Yinglite Chemicals<635>, a chemical manufacturer based in Shizuishan, is mainly engaged in production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), calcium carbide, caustic soda, calcium cyanamide and dicyandiamide. Ningxia Orient Tantalum Industry<000962>, which is principally engaged in the smelting and processing of precious metals, realized net profit of RMB 129.55 million in 2009, up 73.4% year on year. Ning Xia Heng Li Steel Wire Rope<600165>, focusing on manufacture of steel wire products and metal recycling, generated net profit of RMB 4.9 million in 2009.
The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 5.2 billion, contributing 21.8% of the city's total GDP in 2008.
During 2008, 1.3 million tourists visited the city, up 2.3% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 456million, increasing 35.3% compared to the same period of last year.
In 2008, the city’s total foreign trade amounted to US$493 million (comprising US$401 million in exports and US$93 million in imports), up 45.1% year on year. The major export goods are coal and related products, while the key import good is natural rubber. The U.S. and European countries are the city’s major trading partners.
Cultural Highlights
Shizuishan was named for mountains and rocks where the Helan Mountains meet the Yellow River and are in shapes of projecting mouths. The city boasts a profound culture and history. There were people living in the Shizuishan area as early as the Neolithic Age. Since the Han Dynasty, nomadic culture and farming culture have been integrated here.
Currently, Shizuishan is a multi-cultural city with 24 ethnic minority groups, including Hui, Mongols and Tibetans. They live together harmoniously and retain their cultural legacy and life practices.
Tourist Attraction
Shizuishan attracts tourists from all over the world with beautiful scenery that combines water towns of South China and desert landscapes. Sites to see include the Shahu Lake (Sand Lake), which is a paradise for birds and fish, the Yuhuang Pavilion, the Helan Mountain Petroglyph and Beiwudang National Park.
When talking about specialties in Shizuishan, matrimony vines can not be neglected. The vines are edible raw or cooked. In addition, they are also believed to have medicinal uses such as enhancing immune system function, improving eyesight, protecting the liver, boosting sperm production and improving circulation, among other effects.
