Introduction
 

Urumqi is Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region’s capital. It is located at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains and on the southern edge of the Junggar Basin.  

The city experiences a semi-arid continental climate and is located in a mid-temperate zone with short springs and autumns, as well as longer winters and summers.

Urumqi is rich in natural resources such as oil, coal, rare mines, glaciers, forests, grasslands and wind energy, etc.

Additionally, it is the transportation center of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Urumqi Diwopu International Airport, located 16 km from Urumqi’s downtown area, offers flights to China and Middle Asia, West Asia, Europe and Africa. Approximately 115 airlines fly to sixty domestic and international cities. Urumqi is also linked by railways to six major domestic cities including Xi'an, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Zhengzhou and Lanzhou. Lastly, long-distance buses provide transportation to most cities in Xinjiang every day including special tourist lines to Heavenly Lake, Southern Pastures, Turpan and Shihezi, etc.

Urumqi is also the science and technology center of Xinjiang. There are 112 high-tech enterprises, 106 research and develop centers, and 18 post-doctoral research centers located in the city.

 
Economic Features
 
In 2010, Urumqi's GDP amounted to RMB 131.1 billion - a 12.2% increase from the year before. The city has the largest economy in Xinjiang and its GDP accounts for 32.7% of Xinjiang's total.

Urumqi has seven pillar industries, namely, oil processing, metallurgy, textiles, machinery, power industry, chemicals and food processing. The new energy industry (dealing primarily with wind power and solar energy, etc.) is one of the city's emerging key industries. From 2008-2010, the new energy industry is expected to generate industrial output and sales revenues of RMB 3.2 billion and RMB 3.0 billion respectively.

As Urumqi is an important passageway connecting China, Middle Asia and even Europe, foreign-trade is an important business of the city. In 2010, it realized total import and export values of US$5.98 billion - an increase of 60.2% year on year. The figure includes an export value of US$4.43 billion and an import value of US$1.54 billion. Garments and construction equipment are major exports of Urumqi. In addition, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Russia, Tajikistan, the United States and Japan are some of the main countries engaged in trade with the city.

Tourism is yet another important business in Urumqi. In 2010, 7.82 million tourists visited the city, realizing tourist revenues of RMB 7.45 billion - up 27.74% year on year.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Urumqi means "a beautiful pasture land" – a name coined by the Junggar tribe in ancient Mongolian. 2000 years ago, it was an important town on the northern route of the Silk Road, significantly facilitating Sino-foreign economic and cultural exchanges. It has been a multi-ethnic city throughout its history.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

As an important strategic locale along the ancient Silk Road connecting Central Asia even Europe with China, Urumqi is home to numerous cultural relics and historical treasures such as the Tartar Mosque, Qinghai Mosque, Southern Mosque and Shaanxi Mosque.

In addition, famous scenic attractions near Urumqi include Heavenly Lake (also known as Tianchi Lake), Southern Pasture and the Kanas Nature Reserve, which boasts a beautiful natural ecosystem with lakes, rivers, glaciers, forests and grasslands.

Multi-ethnic Urumqi is well known for its diversity in cuisine. Dishes include Pancake (Nang) – a Xinjiang staple, Roasted Mutton, Roasted Stuffed Buns, Hand-pulled Noodles, Rice Eaten with Hands, Milk Tea, Yoghurt Made of Mare's Milk, Rice-Filled Sausages, and Stewed Mutton Eaten with Hands, etc.
