Xining, the capital city of Qinghai province, is also its political, economic and cultural center. It lies to the east of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau and the upper reaches of the Huangshui River.
Xining has a typical mainland plateau climate with an average annual temperature of 7.7℃ and an annual rainfall of 425 mm. It experiences mild summers and winters.
Xining is the transportation hub of Qinghai province. It has two important railways, namely, the Lanzhou-Xining and the Xining-Lhasa which connect Qinghai, Gansu and Tibet. Xining is also the education center of the province. As of the end of 2009, the city had 9 colleges and universities with a total of 43,782 students, an increase of 3.8% over the year before.
Economic Features
In 2010, Xining's GDP grew 18.2% from a year earlier to RMB 62.83 billion, accounting for 62% of the province's total.
Xining has formed industrial chains based on machinery, textiles, chemicals, building materials, metallurgy and leather and food processing.
Its foreign trade value increased 50.23% year-on-year to US$666.87 million in 2010, including an export value of US$396.32 million and an import value of US$270.55 million. Ferrosilicon, machine tools, bearings and cotton yarn are major exports of Xining. Japan, South Korea and the U.S. are the most important trading partners of the city.
Tourism is also an important pillar in Xining. In 2010, it hosted 8.89 million tourists, realizing a tourist income of RMB 4.66 billion, up 16.45% year on year.
Cultural Highlights
In ancient times, Xining was not only an important hinge link between the central plains and the western part of China, but also the most common passing channel of an important stop along the famous Silk Road. Even now, it is still has the only road leading into by which to enter the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Among the 56 ethnic groups in China, about 37 ethnic groups live here, including the Han, Hui, Tu and Tibetans, etc. The local traditions and customs are influenced by them, in especially by particular the Tibetans group.
