| Introduction |

Karamay is located in the northwestern part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, at the southern foot of Zayer Mountain. It covers an area of 7,734 sq km. The population of the city amounted to 0.3 million by the end of 2009.
Karamay has a typical continental climate with very cold winter and extremely hot summer. Fall and spring are very short. The average temperature in Karamay is 8.1℃. Average annual precipitation amounts to 109 mm, while the average annual evaporation totals 3,009 mm.
Karamay is rich in mineral resources. It is one of the earliest and largest oilfields in China. In 2007, newly proven reserves of petroleum amounted to 69.6 million tons. Crude output during the same year amounted to 121.7 million tons, while natural gas output totaled 2.9 billion cubic meters.
Transportation in Karamay is very convenient. State Highway 217 (which runs from Ataile to Kuche) runs through the city. In addition, the Karamay Airport, 13 km from the downtown area, operates daily flights to Urumqi, capital city of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Karamay realized GDP of RMB 48 billion in 2009, representing a fall of 1.2% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 11.2% of Xinjiang's total.
The agricultural sector, the smallest contributor to the city’s economy, generated value-added output of RMB 300 million in 2009, accounting for only 0.6% of the city's GDP.
In 2009, secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor to the city’s economy, realized value-added industrial output of RMB 41.6 billion, accounting for 86.7% of the city's total.
During 2009, gross industrial output of the enterprises above the designated size reached RMB 87.3 billion, sinking 1.5% year on year. Petroleum and petrochemicals are pillar industries of Karamay. Gross industrial output of petroleum and petrochemical-related enterprises decreased by 1.5% year on year to RMB 81.4 billion, contributing 93.2% to the total that generated by enterprises above the designated size.
Karamay-based Xinjiang Dushanzi TianLi High & New Tech Co<600339> is listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. It is principally engaged in the manufacture and sale of petrochemical products. In 2009, the petrochemicals producer realized sales revenue of RMB 890 million.
The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 6.1 billion, accounting for 12.7% of the city's total GDP in 2009.
Tourism plays a key role in service sector. During 2009, 1 million tourists visited the city, up 31.8% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 672 million, representing a rise of 11.8% compared to the previous year.
In 2008, the city’s foreign trade amounted to US$123 million (comprising export value of US$71.8 million and import value of US$51.2 million). Petroleum and petrochemical products are the major export goods of Karamay. Russia, Mongolia and Pakistan are the most important trading partners of the city.

| Cultural Highlights |

Karamay means “black oil,” and was named after the Black Oil Mountain near the city. The first oil well on the mountain began pumping oil in 1955. Karamay Oilfield is the one of the earliest large-scale oilfields to be founded since the People's Republic of China was founded.
There are 37 ethnic groups living together in Karamay. They include the Han, the Uygur, the Mongolian, the Manchu and Russians. The population of minority ethnic groups contributes 23.5% to the city's total.

Tourist attractions of the city include Devil City, Baiyanghe Gorge, Desert Park, Black Oil Mountain, and Karamay No.1 Oil Well.
The Devil City, also called Urho Wind City, has rock formations that make a whistling noise that is very scary and mysterious.
Embellished caps made by local Uygur people and high quality woolen carpets are excellent souvenirs for tourists from home and abroad.
The most famous snacks in Karamay are Flour-Filled Lungs and Rice-Filled Sausages, which use sheep's internal organs as ingredients and are rare delicacies for tourists all over the world.
