Introduction
 

Bayangol Mongol Autonomous Prefecture is located in the southeastern part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The largest prefecture in Xinjiang, Bayangol covers an area of 472,472 sq km, accounting for one fourth of Xinjiang's total area. Its population was 1.29 million by the end of 2009. The Uygur account for approximately 30% of Bayangol's total population, while the Mongols account for 4.0%.

Bayangol comprises plain and mountain areas. Plains account for 52.3% of the prefecture's total area, while mountains account for 47.7%. Desert plains occupy 143,000 sq km, accounting for 30.3% of the prefecture's total area.

Bayangol is rich in natural resources. Tarim Basin, which is one of the largest basins and is replete with petroleum and natural gas resources, is half located in Bayangol.   

Transportation in Bayangol is very convenient. State Highway 314 (which runs from Urumqi to Khunjerab) passes through Korla City, which is the political and economic center of Bayangol. In addition, there are railways connecting Korla with the surrounding major cities of Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, Tulufan, Hami, Lanzhou, Xi'an and Chengdu. Korla Airport, 17 km from the prefecture's downtown, operates scheduled flights to cities including Urumqi, Beijing, Chengdu, and Jinan.

 
Economic Features
 
Bayangol realized GDP of RMB 63.8 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 7.2% year on year. The prefecture's GDP accounted for 15.9% of Xinjiang's total.

The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 10.8 billion in 2010, accounting for 16.9% of the prefecture's GDP. Output of grain and cotton amount to 451,300 tons and 369,700 tons in 2010, contributing approximately 4.2% and 13.9% to Xinjiang's total, respectively.

Secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor to the prefecture's economy, realized value-added output of RMB 41.6 billion, accounting for 65.2% of Bayangol's total.

The industrial sector realized value-added industrial output of RMB36.6 billion in 2010, up 7.5% year on year.  Petroleum and petrochemicals, mining, agricultural and sideline products processing and new energy are the pillar industries of Bayangol.

Bayangol-based Xin Jiang Korla Pear<600506>, which is listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, is mainly engaged in the agricultural business and fruit processing business. It reported operating revenue of RMB 11 million in 2009.

The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 11.4 billion, accounting for 17.9% of the prefecture's total GDP in 2010.  Meanwhile, the sales of consumer goods in Bayangol topped RMB7.38 billion, up 17.1% year on year.

During 2010, approximately 3.65 million tourists visited the prefecture, up 30.4% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 1.52 billion, increasing by 32.2% compared to the previous year.

In 2010, the total import and export value of Bayangol amounted to US$92.24 million, representing a fall of 11.1% year on year. Export value up 13.5% to approximately US$79.61 million, while import value down 62.4% to US$12.63 million. Major export goods include agricultural and sideline products and household appliances. Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, the U.S. and Canada are major export destinations.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Bayangol boasts a profound history thousands of years long. It is located along an important part of the ancient Silk Road. There are 36 ethnic groups living in Bayangol, including the Han, the Mongolia, the Uygur, and the Hui. The Mongol and Uygur cultures are dominant in Bayangol.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Tourist attractions in Bayangol include places of natural scenery such as Tianshan Mountain, Kunlun Mountain, the vast desert, grasslands, and historic landmarks and cultural sites like Tiemen (Iron Gate) Pass, Loulan Ancient Town Ruins and Thousand Buddha Cave.

Among local products, Korla Xiang Pear, which has a cultivation history of over 2,000 years, is very delicious and well sold.
