Hetian Prefecture is located in the southern part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, between Kunlun Mountain and the Taklimakan Desert. It covers an area of approximately 249,100 sq km, accounting for one sixth of Xinjiang's total. Its population was 1.96 million by the end of 2009.
Since Hetian is situated in the Taklimakan Desert area, it has an arid continental desert climate with plenty of sunshine and many sandstorms. The average temperature is 11.1°C -13°C.
Hetian is rich in natural resources. There are 36 rivers and streams running through Hetian. The produce annual runoff of 7.3 billion cubic meters and can generate 146,800 kw annually. Proven reserves of natural gas amount to 62 billion cubic meters, while coal reserves total to 200 million tons. In addition, Hetian Jade, which has a mining history of more than 2000 years, is the most famous unique local resource, and has a very high collection value.
Transportation in Hetian mainly relies on highways and air travel. State Highway 315 (which runs from Xining to Kashen) runs through the prefecture. Hetian Airport, 12 km from the prefecture's downtown, operates the only daily scheduled route to Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Economic Features
Hetian realized GDP of RMB 10.59 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 12.2% year on year. The prefecture's GDP accounted for approximately 2.4% of Xinjiang's total.
The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 3.37 billion in 2010, accounting for 33.6% of the prefecture's GDP. In 2009, the region produced 474,200 tons of fruit and 1 million tons of grains, up 18.86% and 4.85% year on year, respectively.
Secondary industry (industry and construction), the smallest contributor to the prefecture's economy, realized value-added industrial output of RMB 1.92 billion, accounting for 17.2% of Hetian's total.
The industrial enterprises with designated size or above generated gross industrial output of RMB 871 million, up 3.1%year on year. Heavy and light industrial enterprises with designated size or above realized industrial output of RMB 736 million and RMB 135 million, contributing 84% and 16% to the total, respectively.
Due to the abundant Hetian jade resources, Hetian jade processing is the most important pillar industry of the prefecture.
The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 4.74 billion, accounting for 47.3% of the prefecture's total GDP in 2010.
During 2010, approximately 800,000 tourists visited the prefecture, while tourism income totaled RMB 93 million.
In 2010, export value in Hetian amounted to US$7.02 million. Major export goods include agricultural and sideline products, silk and herbs. Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Japan, Korea, Germany, Taiwan and Hong Kong are major export destinations.
Cultural Highlights
Hetian, which used to be named Yutian in ancient times, was one of the thirty-six kingdoms in western China. During its 5,000 years of history, Hetian has been praising as a town of jade, silk, carpet and fruit.
Lots of historic relics, along with various myths, legends, ancient battlefields and ancient temples contribute to Hetian culture, which is a blend of western culture and traditional Han Chinese culture.
In addition, Hetian is an important headstream of Uygur medicine. Uygur medicine has 2,500 years of history and is one important part of traditional Chinese medicine.
Tourist Attraction
The lofty Kunlun Mountain, thought to be the ancestor of all mountains in the world, the vast desert, Gobi, a lost ancient town, and beautiful oases attract thousands of tourists.
The most famous local product of the prefecture is Hetian jade, which has a history of more than 2,000 years. Hetian jade is carved into all kinds of exquisite sacrificial vessels and jade ornaments. Through the ages, Hetian jade had been considered a priceless treasure.
Special snacks include roasted whole lamb, hand grabbed rice, roasted buns, and roasted pancakes, which are very popular among local people.
