Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Region is located to the west of Qinghai Province, bordering Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Sichuan Province. It covers a vast land area of 267,000 sq km and has a population of only 0.36 million. The Yellow River, the Yangtze River and the Mekong River, the largest river in Southeast Asia, all originate in Yushu Region.
Yushu does not have four distinct seasons, and is extremely cold in winter. The average temperature is -0.8° C, and the average annual precipitation is 463.7 mm.
Yushu is rich in natural resources. Runoff of local rivers amounts to 32.4 billion m3, while the theoretical reserves of hydro energy total 5.4 million kw. In addition, mineral resources such as gold, silver, copper, iron, aluminum, coal, sulfur, crystal, and jade are abundant.
Yushu currently is not accessible by railways and airports. State Highway 109 (Qinghai-Tibet) connects Yushu with Xining, Lanzhou, Sichuan and Chongqing. There are also trunk highways connecting all the counties under the jurisdiction of Yushu.
Economic Features
Yushu realized GDP of RMB 3.19 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 20.4% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 3% of Qinghai's total and ranked seventh out of eight in the province.
The value-added output of the agricultural sector, the largest contributor to Yushu's economy, increased by 2.1% year on year to RMB 1.80 billion in 2010, contributing 56.43% to the region's GDP. Animal husbandry is the pillar of the agricultural sector In 2009, 0.9 million livestock were put on the market.
In 2010, the region's value-added industrial output of secondary industry (industry and construction), which lags behind most prefecture cities in Qinghai province, amounted to RMB 728.36 million and accounted for only 22.86% of the city's total.
Electricity, Chinese caterpillar fungus processing, ethnic clothing, and building materials are the pillar industries of the prefecture city. Generated electricity amounted to 98.5 million kw, in 2010, up 4.3% year on year.
In 2010, the service sector, the second largest contributor to the region's economy, generated value-added output of RMB 659.78 million, contributing 18% to the region's GDP. Sales of consumer goods in 2010 amounted to RMB 340.55 million, decreasing by 13.9% year on year.
In 2010, 96,500 tourists visited the region, while tourism income totaled RMB 50.19 million.
Cultural Highlights
Yushu is an important Tibetan living area. Tibetan people constitute 97% of the population of the region and 25% of the total population of the province.
Yushu is also a vast grassland as well as a stage for folk songs and dances. Tibetan folk songs and dances are an important spiritual need of the local people.
In addition, Yushu is a town known for Tibetan Folk Finery. The local people like to collect various pieces of jewelry and different pendants.
Tourist Attraction
Yushu is rich in beautiful tourism resources. Tourists should visit Longbao Beach Natural Reserve, Wencheng Princess Temple, Leba Gouge, Jiegu Temple, Zhujie Temple, Lingguo Temple, and Sanjiang Headstream.
The Headstreams of the Yellow River, the Yangtze River and the Mekong River attract a lot of tourists from all over the world every year.
Annual horse racing, finery performances and the Kangba Cultural Art Festival attract millions of tourists from the outside world.
Tibetan finery and Tibetan knives can be very good souvenirs for tourists.
