The National Historical and Cultural City, Hanzhong, is located in the southwestern part of Shaanxi Province, at the southern foot of the Qinling Mountains. It covers an area of approximately 27,246 sq km. The population of the city amounted to 3.5 million by the end of 2009.
Situated in the Hanzhong basin, the city has no bitterly cold winter and no extremely hot summer. The average temperature here is 14°C while the average annual precipitation reaches 800-1,000 mm.
Hanzhong is rich in natural resources. Forests cover 48% of the city’s lands, which contain timber reserves of 67.8 million steres. Reserves of iron, manganese, nickel, phosphate, gypsum, quartz stone and limestone rank first throughout the province. Since Hanjiang River, Jialingjiang River and their braches run through the city, theoretical reserves of hydro-energy amount to 2.6 million kw, making Hanzhong famous as a water town of North China.
Transportation in Hanzhong is very convenient. There are highways connecting the city with various scenery spots and with counties under its administration. In addition, Hanzhong is also accessible by railway. The Ankang-Pingyang Railway and the Chengdu-Shanghai Railway run through the city. Hanzhong Xiguan Airport, 2 km from the city’s downtown, operates daily flights to Xi'an, the capital city of Shaanxi Province.
Economic Features
Hanzhong realized GDP of RMB 50.97 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 15.1% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 6.6% of Shaanxi's total and ranked seventh out of ten in the province.
The agricultural sector generated value-added industrial output of RMB 11.04 billion in 2010, accounting for 21.66% of the city's GDP. Gross output of the sector amounted to RMB 19 billion, up 6.8% year on year. Pig raising, herb, tea and vegetable planting, and aquaculture are pillars of the sector. As a whole, these five industries realized gross output of RMB1.14 billion, 59.7% to the sector's total.
In 2010, the value-added output of secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor of the city's economy, amounted to RMB 19.9 billion and accounted for 39.14% of the city's total.
The gross industrial output generated by the industrial enterprises with designated size or above reached RMB 40.26 billion in 2010, up 34.1% year on year. According to the eleventh five-year plan (2006-2010) of Hanzhong, tobacco production, food processing, pharmaceutical and chemicals, metallurgy, building materials, machinery and garment processing are pillar industries of the city.
Hanzhong Aviation Industry Co, which was established in 1964 and is principally engaged in producing aviation equipment and auto electric equipment, realized industrial output of RMB 11.8 billion in 2007 and boosted the development related machinery industries of the city.
In 2010, the service sector generated value-added output of RMB 19.98 billion, contributing 31.2% of the city's GDP.
The city's foreign trade amounted to US$44.21 million in 2010, representing an increase of 8.6% compared to the previous year. Exports down 7.2% to US$30.32 million, while imports increased by 73.1% to US$13.89 million. Organic chemicals, machinery and electronic products are the major export goods of the city. The E.U., Japan and India are the most important trading partners of the city.
Tourism is also important for the city's service sector. During 2010, 12.11 million tourists visited the city, up 17.5% year on year, while domestic tourism income totaled RMB 4.8.2 billion, representing a rise of 52.5% compared to the previous year. Tourism income from foreign tourists reached US$6.9 million, increasing by 40.8% over 2009.
Cultural Highlights
Hanzhong boasts a profound history. As early as Shang Dynasty, there were people living in this area. Afterward, Hanzhong became an important military stronghold. Liubang, the first emperor of the Han Dynasty, established a military base in Hanzhong and eventually unified the whole country. Zhuge Liang, the most famous counselor in the Three Kingdoms period, also set up a military stronghold in Hanzhong.
Hanzhong is also the birthplace of Zhangqian, the exploiter of the Silk Road. Cailun, the creator of paper making, was buried here. Dingjun Mountain, the first Chinese movie, which was produced in 1905, was about fighting that happened in Mianxian County of Hanzhong during the Three Kingdoms period.
Tourist Attraction
Hanzhong is rich in cultural landmarks and historic sites. There are ten key cultural landmarks under state-level protection, namely, Baoxie Road, Stone Gate, Wuhou Tomb, Longgang Temple, Zhangqian Tomb, Cailun Tomb, Kaiming Temple Tower, Lijia Village Ruins, Zhangliang Temple, and Lingya Temple.
Local snacks of Shannan Bacon, Chinese gooseberry liquor, salty vegetables, Hanzhong Bangbang Noodle and roasted duck can be delicious dishes for tourists from China and abroad.
