Tongchuan is located in the middle part of Shaanxi Province, in the transition zone between Guanzhong Plain and Huangtu Plateau. It covers an area of 3,882 sq km. The population of the city amounted to 0.8 million by the end of 2009. The city tree is the wattle, and the city flower is the rose, while the city bird is the wood thrush.
Tongchuan has a warm temperate continental climate with a hot summer and a cold winter. The average temperature is 8.9-12.3°C. The average annual precipitation reaches 300-400 mm, while the average annual sunshine totals to 2345.7-2412.5 hours.
Tongchuan is rich in natural resources. Reserves of coal amount to 2.6 billion tons, with the output accounting for approximately one third of Shaanxi Province’s total, while reserves of loess and refractory clay also ranked first among all the cities in the province.
Transportation in Tongchuan is very convenient. Tongchuan is 68 km from Xi'an, the capital city of Shaanxi Province and 72 km from the Xianyang International Airport, which operates 93 domestic routes and 25 international routes. The Xi'an-Huangling Expressway runs through Tongchuan, while the Xianyang-Tongchuan and the Meijiaping-Qili railway branch lines connect the city with the Lanzhou-Lianyungang Trunk Railway.

Tongchuan realized GDP of RMB 18.77 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 15.6% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 2.4% of Shaanxi's total and ranked last among ten prefecture-level cities in the province. The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 1.4 billion in 2010, accounting for 7.6% of the city's GDP.
In 2010, the value-added output of secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor to the city's economy, amounted to RMB 11.65 billion and accounted for 62% of the city's total. The value-added industrial output generated by the enterprises with designated size and above reached RMB 9.6 billion, up 19.6% year on year.
Coal mining, non-metallic products manufacturing and nonferrous metallurgy are the three major industries in the city. In 2009, these industries generated value-added industrial output of RMB 6.9 billion, RMB 3.5 billion and RMB 2.9 billion, respectively. Meanwhile, food and beverages, pharmaceuticals and textiles are the emerging major industries in the city.
Shaanxi QinLing Cement<600217>, principally engaged in the manufacture and sale of cement products and clinker, is the only Shanghai-listed company based in Tongchuan. However, the cement producer has reported financial losses for many years. In 2009, the company suffered a net loss of RMB 308 million.
In 2010, the service sector generated value-added industrial output of RMB 5.7 billion, contributing 30.4% to the city's GDP.
The city's foreign trade amounted to US$4.9 million in 2010, Exports up 8.4% to US$3.9 million, while imports tumbled 72.4% to US$0.99 million. Ferro-alloys, organic chemicals and fresh apples are the major export goods of the city, while major import goods include metalliferous ores and machinery and electronic products, among others. The Philippines, South Africa and Japan are the most important trading partners of the city.

Tongchuan boasts a profound history. In the Xia and Shang Dynasties, Tongchuan belonged to the Yong State. During the Han Dynasty (155 B.C.), Tongchuan became a county. In 2000, Tongchuan was approved by the State Council to be a prefecture-level city.

Tongchuan is rich in historical and cultural landmarks as well as beautiful natural scenery. There are 675 heritage attractions including several that are under state- and provincial-level protection. Top attractions include Yaozhou Kiln Museum, Yuhua Palace Ruins and Yaowang Mountain Stone Cave.
When it comes to snacks in Tongchuan, Hele, which is vermicelli made of buckwheat, is very popular among local people and is cheap and delicious.
