Introduction
 

Weinan is located in the eastern part of Shaanxi Province, bordering Shanxi and Henan provinces and the Yellow River. It covers an area of approximately 13,000 sq km. The population of the city amounted to 5.4 million by the end of 2009.  

Weinan has a temperate semi-arid monsoon climate with plenty of sunshine and four distinct seasons. The average temperature is 11.3-13.6°C. The average annual precipitation reaches 529-638 mm, while the average annual sunshine totals to 2144-2505 hours.

Weinan is rich in mineral resources. Mineral resources such as coal, molybdenum and gold are abundant. Proven reserves of molybdenum amount to 1.5 million tons, ranking second throughout China. Reserves of gold ore total 217,000 tons, accounting for almost half of the province's total. In addition, the daily output of Dali Mineral Spring Water amounts to 60,000 tons, ranking first in China.

Transportation in Weinan is very convenient and mainly relies on highways and railways. State Highway 108 (Beijing-Kunming of Yunnan Province), the Xi'an-Weinan Expressway, the Weinan-Tongguan Expressway and five railways, namely the Lanzhou-Lianyungang Railway, the Xianyang-Tongchuan Railway, the Xi'an-Yan'an Railway, the Xi'an-Hancheng Railway, and the Taiyuan-Fenglingdu Railway run through the city.

 
Economic Features
 
Weinan realized GDP of RMB 80.14 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 15% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 10% of Shaanxi's total. The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 12.89 billion in 2010, accounting for 16.1% of the city's GDP. 

In 2010, the value-added output of secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor to the city's economy, amounted to RMB 39.46 billion and accounted for 49.2% of the city's total.

The gross industrial output generated by the industrial enterprises with designated size or above reached RMB 93.8 billion in 2010, up 34.8% year on year. Ferrous metal smelting and rolling, electricity, non-ferrous metal mining, coal mining, chemicals, and coking are the pillar industries of the city. Ferrous metal smelting and rolling is the largest contributor to the sector, and realized industrial output of RMB 68.1 billion, accounting for 18.6% to the total from industrial enterprises with designated size or above.

Jinduicheng Molybdenum<601958>, primarily engaged in the mining, processing, trade and research of molybdenum products, is the only Shanghai-listed company based in Weinan. The company realized net profit of RMB 549 million in 2009, decreasing 79.9% compared to the previous year.

Shenzhen-listed company Changsha Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science and Technology Development<000157>, focusing on heavy industrial equipment manufacturing, inked a deal with Weinan High-tech Industrial Development Park to establish a construction machinery production base in October 2008. The program, with fixed asset investment of RMB 1.1 billion, is expected to start operation in 2011.

In 2010, the service sector generated value-added industrial output of RMB 27.8 billion, contributing 34.7% of the city's GDP.

The city's foreign trade amounted to US$169.27 million in 2010, up 47.12% year on year. Exports up 19.59% to US$101.1million. Machinery and electronic products, agricultural products and unwrought magnesium are the major export goods of the city, while major import goods also include machinery and electronic products, among others. ASEAN member nations, Hong Kong and Japan are the most important trading partners of the city.

In 2010, Weinan attracted US$55.6 million in contracted foreign investments, while the utilized FDI in the city to US$30.51 million.

Tourism is also important for the city's service sector. During 2010, 13.28. million tourists visited the city, up 19.41% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 6.76 billion, representing a rise of 31.36% compared to the previous year.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Weinan boasts a profound history. It is one of the birthplaces of Chinese culture. As early as 80,000 years ago, Lantian pithecanthropus were living in this area. It is believed that about 20,000 years ago, Dali people were also living here.

During its long history, Weinan was always an important military stronghold. Many ancient Great Walls and wartime landmarks have been discovered here. There are 58 key cultural landmarks under state- and provincial-level protection. They include Xiyue Temple, Tang Emperor Mausoleum, and Sima Qian Tomb.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Weinan is the birthplace of many famous figures in history such as Cangjie, the legendary inventor of Chinese characters, Dukang, the legendary inventor of a type of liquor, Sima Qian, the great historian, and Emperor Suiwen.

Weinan is not only rich in cultural landmarks, but also replete with natural scenery spots. Famous tourist attractions include Mount Huashang, Longmen Tourism Area, and Qiaochuan Scenery Area.

Weinan Meila Porcelain series dishware and paper-cuttings are excellent souvenirs for tourists from both home and abroad.

The city's special foods include Lingzhi mushrooms of Huashan Mountain, sauce vegetables of Tongguan County, dried persimmon and Qiong Guo Tang (a kind of candy) of Fuping County.
