Yining is the capital of the Yili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture, and is located in the west of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is one of three border land port cities in Xinjiang.
The city is located in a temperate zone, and experiences a continental climate with longer winters and summers, and shorter springs and falls.
Yining has fertile arable land, abundant water, vast grasslands and mineral resources, etc.
Highways and airlines are the two main means of transportation. There are scheduled flights from Yining to Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, every day. The Wuyi highway connects Yining, Shihezi and Urumqi.

In 2009, GDP of Yining rose 14.3% to RMB 7.9 billion. The agricultural, industry and service sector amounted to RMB 387 million, RMB 2.28 billion and RMB 5.24 billion, respectively.
The value-added industrial output of the city amounted to RMB 1.5 billion, up 16.4% year on year. Yining has established agricultural products processing, coal chemicals, automobiles, building materials, textiles and home appliances as its pillar industries.
In 2009, more than 1.64 million tourists have visited the city, with the total tourism income of RMB 262.51 million.
Located 3 km from downtown Yining, Yining Land Port is a national category-2 port (category-2 ports refer to ports which have been established with the approval and administration of the people's government at a provincial level).
Aside from Yining Land Port, Yining is also able to use Khorgos Land Port (92 km from Yining), Dulata Land Port and Muzart Land Port to develop border trade with countries in Central Asia and even Europe. All three land ports are national category-1 ports (Category-1 ports refer to ports which have been established with the approval of the State Council). |

There are 34 minorities living in Yining. The city’s multicultural diversity is reflected in its traditional activities such as the Dance of Uighur, Beilun Dance (from Xibo), Tita Dance (from Russia) and Horse Race (from the Kazakhs).

Yining is a garden city in the west of China. It attracts tourists with its magnificent scenery and cultural relics such as Tianshan Mountain, Yili River, Alamutu Resort, City Seascape Park, Han Princess Memorial, Lin Zexu Memorial Hall, etc.
In the pastures of Yining, horse milk wine and milk tea are served. Nang (pancake), grabbed mutton and bacon are some of the staple dishes of local Kazakhs.
