Hekou Yao Autonomous County is located in the southeast of Yunnan province and adjacent to Vietnam. It is one of Yunnan’s major border land port cities.
Hekou has a tropical climate. The weather is usually hot and humid with a highest temperature of 40.9°C in the summer and a lowest temperature of 2.1°C in the winter.
Hekou is replete with forests, wild animals and cash crops. It is renowned for its rubber production throughout China. It is the second largest rubber production base in Yunnan.
Transportation in Hekou relies largely on its highways and railways. An 82.3 km national highway and a 64 km Meter-gauge Railway run across the county. The Meter-gauge Railway is mainly used for cargo transportation.

In 2009, Hekou's GDP grew 14.5% from a year earlier to RMB 1.5 billion. Within this figure, its secondary industry (industry & construction) and tertiary industry (services) realized value-added industrial outputs of RMB 353 million and RMB 838 million, accounting for 23.7% and 56.4% of the city's total respectively.
Secondary Industry in Hekou is relatively underdeveloped. Tropical fruits and plants processing are the county's pillar industry.
Hekou Land Port is located at the intersection of Nanxi River and Red River. It is a national category-1 port (category-1 ports refer to ports which have been established with the approval of the State Council). In 2009, the total import and export value of Hekou Land Port reached RMB 4.7 billion, down 8.4% year on year.
Major export products include locomotives, electrical power and mechanical equipment, while key import goods include hardware, chemical products, steel and iron, various minerals and so forth. Vietnam and Laos are the city’s most important trading partners.
Tourism is another pillar of Hekou's service sector. In 2009, Hekou attracted 1.3 million tourists, realizing tourism revenues of RMB 584 million, up 9.8% year on year.

The minority population of Hekou accounts for approximately 58.6% of the city's total while the Yao people account for 26%. Yao Culture Street in Hekou displays the Yao people's architecture style, cuisine, clothing, and arts and crafts to visitors.

Hekou attracts tourists with its beautiful tropical scenery, and exotic and multinational culture. Yao Culture Street, Sino-Vietnam Bridge, Vietnam Street, Hekou Nanxi River Resort and Huayu Hole Forest Park are all worth visiting.
