Located in the north of the Sichuan Basin and 98 km from Chengdu (the capital city of Sichuan Province), Mianyang covers on area of 20,281 sq km with a population of 5.4 million.
Mianyang has a subtropical climate with an annual average rainfall of 1100 mm and a maximum temperature of 39°C (102°F) in summer and a minimum temperature of -5°C (23°F) in winter.
Mianyang has a well-developed transportation infrastructure and is an important traffic hub in North Sichuan. It has two expressways, namely, the Chengdu-Mianyang expressway and the Mianyang-Guangyuan expressway. The Baoji-Chengdu railway runs through the entire city, which is the most important rail link between Sichuan and north China. In addition, Mianyang Nanjiao Airport has scheduled flights to over 10 major cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou and so on.
Mianyang is rich in human resources. As of the end of 2009, the city had 12 colleges and universities. Furthermore, it has well-known research institutions such as China Academy of Engineering Physics and China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center.
Economic Features
In 2010, Mianyang's GDP grew 15.3% from a year earlier to RMB 96 billion, becoming the second largest economy in Sichuan (after Chengdu) and accounting for 6.8% of the province's total.
Mianyang has seven industrial clusters, namely, electronic information, metallurgy, auto and auto parts manufacturing, building materials, biopharmaceuticals, food processing, and textiles. These generated a gross industrial output of RMB 122.9 billion in 2010, contributing 91.5% to the total of that from enterprises with the designated size and above in the city.
There are many famous enterprises located in Mianyang. For example, Changhong is one of the largest Chinese consumer electronics providers. It specializes in R&D, manufacturing and marketing of consumer electronics products such as TVs, air conditioners, refrigerators, telephones and digital products.
Sichuan Jiuzhou Electric Group, one of the 520 key enterprises and one of the top 100 electronic information enterprises in China, is also located in Mianyang. It focuses on scientific research and production and is the exporting base of digital TV equipment in China.
Mianyang's foreign trade value up 20.1% year-on-year to US$1.9 billion in 2010, including an export value of US$113 billion and an import value of US$770 million. Mechanical, electronic and chemical products are major exports of Mianyang. Russia, Indonesia, the United States and Ukraine are the most important trade partners of the city.
In 2010, Mianyang attracted foreign investment of US$270 million, up 5.6% from the previous year. The utilized FDI in the city was US$150 million.
Cultural Highlights
Mianyang has a 2,200 year-old history dating back to Emperor Han Gaozu, the first emperor of the Han Dynasty who founded Fu County in 201 B.C. In addition, Mianyang is the hometown of Li Bai, an immortal poet of the Tang Dynasty. It is currently named a “China Science City” by the State Council.
Tourist Attraction
Mianyang attracts tourists with its scenic mountains and clear waters. It possesses ecological attractions such as Wanglang Natural Protective Region, Qianfoshan Mountain, Luofushan Mountain, Doutuanshan Mountain and Ape King Cave. It is also famous for “The Three Kingdoms Relic” historical sites including Fule Mountain and Zitong Big Temple Mountain.
