Introduction
 

Manzhouli, located in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, has an area of 720 sq km and a population of about 0.3 million. It is the largest land port city on the Sino-Russian border.

Manzhouli is located on the Hulunbeier Grassland. To its South, it borders the Hulun Lake, the fifth largest freshwater lake in China. Hulun Lake covers an area of 2,339 sq km, with an average depth of 5.7 meters.

Trains from Beijing to Moscow pass through the city. Passengers may also fly to Beijing and Inner Mongolia's capital city, Hohhot, via the Manzhouli airport, which is a mere 5 km from the Sino-Russian border.

 
Economic Features
 
In 2009, Manzhouli’s GDP hit RMB 12 billion, up 11.5% year on year. Timber processing is its pillar industry. In 2009, the city’s timber processing amounted to 3.06 million m3, realizing a total industrial output of RMB 4.2 billion.

Foreign trade is also one of the city’s major businesses. In 2009, the total import and export of Manzhouli amounted to US$3.1 billion, representing a decrease of 22.5% year on year and accounting for 45.8% of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region's total. Russia and Mongolia are major trade partners of the city.

In 2009, the land port border trade of Manzhouli (including other city’s foreign trade via Manzhouli’s land port) totaled US$6.67 billion, sinking 38.2% year on year. Major destinations include Russia and Mongolia.

Tourism is another major business of Manzhouli. In 2009, the city attracted 3.6 million tourists, realizing tourist revenues of RMB 3.5 billion, up 9.6% year on year.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Russian culture dominates the city. Many Russians cross the border to buy cheap Chinese goods. As a result, there are a large number of Russian cafes, restaurants and bars in Manzhouli. Russian is also widely spoken by the Chinese inhabitants there.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Major tourist attractions in Manzhouli include the Hulunbeier Grassland, known as "the purest grassland in China", and the Hulun Lake, which is the fifth largest freshwater lake in China.
