Introduction
 

Zhaotong is located in the northeastern part of Yunnan Province, at the intersection of Yunling Plateau and the Sichuan Basin. It covers an area of 23,021 sq km. Its population is 5.61 million.

Zhaotong has a subtropical plateau monsoon climate. The average temperature is 12.6°C, while the average annual precipitation totals 760 mm.

Zhaotong is rich in natural resources. Reserves of the coal in Zhaotong amount to 16.6 billion tons, ranking first in Yunnan. Zhaotong is also one of five pyrite mining areas in China. It is also rich in water resources. Theoretical reserves of hydro-energy and available installed capacity amount to 20.8 million kw and 16.1 million kw, respectively. In addition, Zhaotong is the largest high-quality apple planting base in southern China.

Zhaotong has a convenient transportation system. State Highway 213 runs through the prefecture-level city and extends to Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province and Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu Province. Using the Jinsha River waterway, 500 ton ships are able to sail directly to Chongqing and Shanghai. In addition, Zhaotong Airport, 10 km from the city’s downtown, operates daily flights to Kunming.
 
Economic Features
 
Zhaotong realized GDP of RMB 37.96 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 14.2% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 6.1% of Yunnan's total.

The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 7.4 billion in 2010, accounting for 19.5% of the city's GDP. Secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor to the city's economy, realized value-added output of RMB 17.48 billion, accounting for 46.1% of the city's total.

The industrial sector realized gross industrial output of RMB 26.3 billion, up 19.7% year on year, while that from industrial enterprises with designated size or above increased by 16.8% to RMB 20.5 billion, contributing 77.9% to the industrial sector's total. Heavy and light industrial enterprises with designated size or above realized gross industrial output of RMB 14.3 billion and RMB 6.14 billion, contributing 18% and 14%, respectively.

Coal, calcium carbide, cement, tobacco, electricity, lead and zinc are the major industrial products of the city. There are two industrial parks, namely Zhaoyang Industrial Park and Shuifu Special Industrial Park, which contributed nearly one fifth of the industrial sector's total.

Zhaotong is home to large industrial programs, including Zhaotong Lead and Zinc Mine, which has a daily capacity of two thousand tons, and Shuifu Chemical of Yunnan Yuntianhua Co<600096>, which is a Shanghai-listed fertilizer and chemical producer.

The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 13.07 billion, accounting for 34.4% of the city's total GDP in 2010. 

Tourism is an important pillar of the service sector. During 2010, 5.91 million tourists visited the city, up 24.4% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 2 million, representing a rise of 33.86% compared to the previous year.

In 2010, the total value of imports and exports amounted to US$14.05 million (comprising export value of US$9.55 million and import value of US$4.5 million), up 40.8% year on year. The city's major export goods are agricultural and sideline products and biological products. Honglian Bristle Factory and Weili Starch Factory are two major export factories of the city. 
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Zhaotong boasts a profound historical culture and is known as one of the three headstreams of Yunnan Culture (Dali, Zhaotong and Kunming).

As early as 10 thousand years ago, there were Zhaotong people living in the area. During the Western Han Dynasty, Zhaotong was officially designated as Zhuti Shire. The Han Culture has been dominant in Zhaotong since then.

In addition, Aboriginal Culture, Immigrant Culture and Folk Minority Culture are also important to Zhaotong.
 
Tourist Attraction
 

Tourist attractions in Zhaotong include Wuchi Road, Yuanzi Stone Inscription, the Hanging Coffins, Biaoshui Rock Waterfall, Huanglian River Natural Area, and Qinglong Cave, among others.

Yuanzi Stone Inscription, a symbol of the reunification of the country's feudal central government and the local government during the Tang Dynasty, is a Key Cultural Landmark under National Protection.

Because Zhaotong is the largest high-quality apple production base in South China, large quantities of apples are sold and enjoyed in Zhaotong. In addition, fried cake and pea paste, believed to have a beautifying effect, is very delicious and popular among the local people.
