Introduction
 

Wenshan Autonomous Prefecture is located in the southeastern part of Yunnan Province. It covers an area of 32,239 sq km. Its population is 3.4 million.

70% of Wenshan’s land is in a subtropical climate zone while 30% of its land is in a temperate area. The average temperature is 15.8-19.3°C. The average annual precipitation totals 992-1,329 mm.  

Wenshan is rich in mineral and herbal medicine resources. Minerals such as coal, iron, tin, tungsten, manganese, antimony, zinc and lead are abundant, while output and quality of Sanqi, also called Tianqi, which is a useful traditional herbal medicine, ranks first in China. In addition, economic crops including star anise, pepper, fennel, tea, tung, and so on are also grown in Wenshan.

Transportation in Wenshan mainly relies on highways. State Highway 323 runs through the prefecture and extends to Guangxi Autonomous Region and Jiangxi Province. In addition, there are some other provincial highways connecting the prefecture with surrounding cities in Yunnan Province.
 
Economic Features
 
Wenshan realized GDP of RMB 24.4 billion in 2008, representing a rise of 12.6% year on year. The prefecture's GDP accounted for approximately 4.3% of Yunnan's total.

The agricultural sector, the smallest contributor of the prefecture's economy, generated value-added output of RMB 6.4 billion in 2008, accounting for 26% of the prefecture's GDP. Total output value of agricultural sector was RMB 9.7 billion, up 7.8% year on year.  

Secondary industry (industry and construction) realized value-added output of RMB 8.6 billion, accounting for 36% of the prefecture's total.

The industrial sector realized total industrial output of RMB 6.4 billion, up 15.2% year on year, while industrial output of enterprises with designated size or above increased by 16.1% to RMB 5.4 billion, contributing 84.3% to the industrial sector's total. Heavy and light industrial enterprises with designated size or above realized industrial output of RMB 3.9 billion and RMB 1.5 billion, contributing 72% and 28% to the total, respectively.

Tobacco, electricity, mining and metallurgy, pharmaceutical, and cement production are the pillar industries of Wenshan. There is a Shanghai-listed company based in Wenshan, namely, Yunnan Wenshan Electric Power<600995>. It is principally engaged in the generation and supply of electricity, as well as the construction, installation and maintenance of power plants. In 2008, the company realized net profit of RMB 148 million, increasing by 17.8% over the previous year.

Service sector, the largest contributor to the prefecture's economy, generated value-added output of RMB 9.3 billion, accounting for 38% of the prefecture's total GDP in 2008.  

Wenshan has two land ports bordering Vietnam, namely Tianbao Port and Tianpeng Port. The foreign trade value of the prefecture amounted to US$127.7million in 2008, with a sharp rise of 16.2% over the previous year. Exports rose 44.8% to US$76.8 million, while imports sank 10.4% to US$50.88 million. Major export goods are electricity, auto parts, equipment, vegetables, and fruit, while major import goods include wood products and ore. Vietnam is the most important trading partner of the prefecture.

Tourism is also important for the prefecture. During 2008, 3.9 million tourists visited the prefecture, up 10.9% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 2.54 billion, representing a rise of 5.8% compared to the previous year. 
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Wenshan is a multi-cultural prefecture with many ethnic minority groups, including the Zhuang, the Miao, the Yi, the Buyi, the Hui, the Yao, and the Bai. They live together harmoniously and retain their cultural legacy and life practices. Varied eating habits, ceremonies, costumes, folk legends and festivals such as the Sanyuesan Festival of the Zhuang people, the Caihuashan Festival of the Miao people, the Panwang Festival of Yao people, and the Torch Festival of the Bai people, make Wenshan a colorful prefecture. 

The Zhuang people account for approximately one third of the prefecture's total population, while the Miao and the Yi account for 12% and 10% of the total, respectively.

Wenshan is also famous for the ancient bronze drums that were discovered in the area.
 
Tourist Attraction
 

Tourists should visit Bamei Village, which is a “wonderland.” in the words of Tao Yuanming, a famous writer in the Jin Dynasty. People of the village remain their Zhuang cultural legacy and life practices. Unique natural resources and colorful cultural customs make Bamei the most attractive tourist attraction in Wenshan.

Wenshan is home to the Sanqi plant, which is used in traditional herbal medicine. Approximately 90% of the Sanqi in China are in Wenshan.
