Introduction
 

Xishuangbanna Autonomous Prefecture is located in the southern part of Yunnan Province. It covers an area of 19,582 sq km. Its population is 1.08 million. The Dai ethnic group is dominant in the prefecture.

Xishuangbanna is located in the tropical part of China. It has a temperate and humid climate, with enough sunshine and rain. The average temperature is 21.0°C. The average annual precipitation totals 1,555 mm.  

Xishuangbanna is rich natural and cultural resources. Forests cover approximately 60% of its lands. It is an important rubber production base in China with an output of rubber ranking first in the country. It also boasts many types of animals and plants, including herbs used in traditional medicine.

Transportation in Xishuangbanna is very convenient. There is an expressway connecting the prefecture with Kunming. Xishuangbanna Jinghong Airport, 5 km from Jinghong County, is the second largest airport in Yunnan Province. The airport operates scheduled flights to domestic cities such as Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Chengdu, Chongqing, Tianjin and Shanghai,  as well as to Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. In addition, the Jinghong Port, comprising Jinghong Dock, Ganlanba Dock and Guanlei Dock, offers international water routes to Burma and Laos.
 
Economic Features
 
Xishuangbanna realized GDP of RMB 16.09 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 12.1% year on year. The prefecture's GDP accounted for approximately 2.6% of Yunnan's total.

The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 4.44 billion in 2010, accounting for 27.62% of the prefecture's GDP. Total output value of the sector amounted to RMB 7.6 billion, representing a rise of 9% year on year.

Secondary industry (industry and construction), the second smallest contributor to the prefecture's economy, realized value-added output of RMB 4.7 billion, accounting for 29.61% of the prefecture's total.

The industrial sector realized total industrial output of RMB 5.96 billion, up 17.4% year on year. Mining, tea processing, sugar and electricity are the major industries in the city. In 2010, these industries generated value-added industrial output of RMB 457.51 million, RMB 587.92 million, RMB 230.35 million and RMB 1.01billion, up 0.4%, up 24.3%, up17.1% and up 5.9% year on year, respectively.

Service sector, the largest contributor to the prefecture's economy, generated value-added output of RMB 6.88 billion, accounting for 42.7% of the prefecture's total GDP in 2010. 

Tourism is the most important pillar of the service sector. During 2010, 8.53 million tourists visited the prefecture, up 16.5% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 8.03 billion, representing a rise of 28.8% compared to the previous year. 

Since Xishuangbanna borders Burma, foreign trade is also important for the prefecture. The total import and export value of the prefecture amounted to US$1.033 billion, comprising export value of US$925.08 million and import value of US$107.92 million. Major export goods are agriculture products and hardware, while major import goods include wood and ore. Burma is the most important trading partner of the prefecture.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Xishuangbanna is a multi-cultural prefecture with many ethnic minority groups, including the Dai, the Hani, the Bulang, the Jinuo, the Wa and the Yao. The Dai people account for approximately 50% of the prefecture's total population. Xishuangbanna’s various ethnic groups live together harmoniously and retain their cultural legacy and life practices. Varied eating habits, ceremonies, costumes and folk legends make Xishuangbanna a colorful prefecture. 

Buddhism is dominant in Xishuangbanna. Most of the Dai people are devout Buddhists. The Water-sprinkling Festival is the most important and grandest festival for the Dai people. During the three-day festival, people sprinkle water onto others as a way to express their best wishes.
 
Tourist Attraction
 

Xishuangbanna boasts beautiful, exotic, tropical scenery. Tourist attractions include Manfeilong Buddha Tower, Lancang River Bank, Mange Buddha Temple, Manjinglan Tourist Village, Yilan Resort, Menglun Botanical Garden, Ethnic Customs Park, Wild Elephant Vale, and Jinghong Original Forest Park.

Jinghong, the political, economic and cultural center of Xishuangbanna, contains a large area of tropical rainforest known as the “Gene Pool of Species,” which is home to oil palms, coconut palms and mango trees.

Dai cuisine is famous in Yunnan Province. Glutinous rice, sour baked meat, and aquatic products are major ingredients of the Dai cuisine, making it special and impressive for tourists from China and abroad.
