Introduction
 

Nujiang Autonomous Prefecture is located in the northwestern part of Yunnan Province, bordering Burma to the west. It covers an area of 14,703 sq km. Its population is 0.51 million.

The climate of Nujiang is a subtropical mountain monsoon climate. The temperature difference within a year is very small; there are no distinct four seasons.

Nujiang is rich in natural resources. Forests cover approximately 70% of its lands. Total water resources of the prefecture amount to 95.6 billion cubic meters, accounting for 43% of Yunnan's total. Theoretical reserves of hydro energy reach 20 million kw, accounting for 20% of the province's total while generated electricity amounts to 85.1 billion kwh annually, contributing 19% of the province's total.

Transportation in Nujiang mainly relies on asphalt highways and is not as convenient as in other prefecture-level cities. Liuku Town, the political center of Nujiang, is 600 km from Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province.
 
Economic Features
 
In 2009, Nujiang realized GDP of RMB 4.8 billion, representing a rise of 13.1% year on year. The agricultural sector, the smallest contributor to the prefecture's economy, generated value-added output of RMB 620.9 million in 2009, accounting for 12.9% of the prefecture's GDP. The output value from agricultural sector was RMB 954.37 million in 2009, up 5.6% year on year.

Secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor to the prefecture's economy, realized value-added industrial output of RMB 2.04 billion, accounting for 42.4% of the prefecture's total.

Electricity and metallurgy are the two major industries in Nujiang. In 2009, the two industries generated value-added industrial output of RMB 229.38 million and RMB 967.96 million respectively.

The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 2.15 billion, accounting for 44.7% of the prefecture's total GDP in 2009.

Tourism is the most important pillar for the service sector. In 2009, more than 1.4 million tourists have visited the prefecture, generating tourism income of RMB 664 million.

The total foreign trade value of the prefecture amounted to RMB 277 million in 2009. Major export goods are hardware and equipment, while import goods include wood materials and agricultural products. Burma is the most important trading partner of the prefecture.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Nujiang is a multi-cultural prefecture with many ethnic minority groups, including the Lisu, the Nu, the Dulong and the Bai. The Lisu and Bai people account for approximately 52% and 28% of the prefecture’s total population, respectively.

Varied eating habits, ceremonies, costumes, folk legends and festivals, such as Kuoshi Festival, Xianhua Festival and Kaqiewa Festival, when people gather together to sing and dance, make Nujiang a colorful prefecture.
 
Tourist Attraction
 

Popular tourist attractions of the prefecture include Nujiang River First Gulf, Moon Mountain Scenery Area, Duling River, Tiger Valley, and Lanping Scenery Area.

Local ethnic minority cuisines are impressively unique and delicious. For example, the Lisu people use oil plants to make various dainties. In addition, Liquor Stew Chicken, Sour Bamboo Shoot, Daye (big leaf) tea, Meat Liquor and Egg Liquor are special things to try.
