Introduction
 

Dali Autonomous Prefecture is located in the middle-western part of Yunnan Province. It covers an area of 29,459 sq km. Its population is 3.51 million. The Bai ethnic group is dominant in Dali.

The climate of Dali varies with the altitude. Spring in Dali is very long and warm. Temperature differences within a year are very small. The average annual precipitation totals approximately 1,050 mm.  

Dali is rich in mineral and water resources. Minerals such as marble, limestone, quartz sand, fluorite, clay, coal, platinum, palladium, manganese and antimony are abundant. Installed capacity of hydro energy amounts to 29,700 kw. In addition, Dali also has access to sources of terrestrial heat; the temperature of the Tangzipu Hot Spring can reach 76.5°C.

Transportation in Dali is very convenient. State Highway 214 and State Highway 320 intersect in Dali. There are also an expressway and a railway connecting Dali with Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province. In addition, Dali Airport, 12 km from the prefecture’s downtown, operates scheduled flights to Kunming, Lijiang and other surrounding cities.
 
Economic Features
 
Dali realized GDP of RMB 47.49 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 13% year on year. The prefecture's GDP accounted for approximately 7.6% of Yunnan's total.

The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 10.9 billion in 2010, accounting for 23% of the prefecture's GDP. Dali has produced 1.27 million tons of grain, down 8.8% year on year.

Secondary industry (industry and construction), the second largest contributor to the prefecture's economy, realized value-added industrial output of RMB 18.83 billion, accounting for 39.6% of the prefecture's total.

The industrial sector realized total industrial output of RMB 47.7 billion, up 26.2% year on year, while industrial output of enterprises with designated size or above increased by 30% to RMB 32.3 billion, contributing 67.7% to the industrial sector's total. Heavy and light industrial enterprises with designated size or above realized industrial output of RMB 29.8 billion and RMB 17.8 billion, contributing 62% and 38% to the total, respectively.

Tobacco, building materials, metallurgy, mechanical equipment, electricity, biological resources processing and deep processing of agricultural products are the pillar industries of the prefecture. In 2010, these industries generated gross industrial output of RMB 34 billion, accounting for 71.34% of the city's total. 

The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 17.76 billion, accounting for 37.4% of the prefecture's total GDP in 2010.

Tourism is the most important pillar of the service sector. During 2010, 12.97 million domestic tourists visited the prefecture, up 17.28% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 11.5 billion, representing a rise of 24.86% compared to the previous year. 

The total import and export value of the prefecture amounted to US$184.49 million in 2010, with a sharp rise of 28.1% over the previous year. Exports rose 72.6% to US$107.55 million, while imports down 5.85% to US$76.94 million. Major export goods are powdered milk, cotton, and agricultural and sideline products, while import goods include zinc ore and equipment. ASEAN member nations are the primary trading partners of the prefecture.

In 2010, the utilized FDI of Dali reached US$21.83 million.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Dali boasts a profound historical culture and is known as one of the three headstreams of Yunnan Culture (Dali, Zhaotong and Kunming). It was the economic, political and cultural center of Yunnan for hundreds of years.

Dali culture is a blend of Chinese Han Culture, Tibetan Culture and local ethnic culture. The Bai minority is the major ethnic group in Dali. There are about 1.4 million Bai people living in Yunnan Province, and approximately 80% of them live in Dali.

Traditional Bai festivals, fairs and customs such as Raosanling, a festival of singing and dancing, Seeding Fairs, and Sanyuejie, a grand trading festival, are representative of the folk culture of the historical prefecture.
 
Tourist Attraction
 

Popular tourist attractions of the prefecture include Dali Ancient Town, Western Street, Butterfly Spring, Cang Mountain, Er Sea, Congsheng Temple, General Temple, and Shibao Mountain Buddhist Grottoes.

When it comes to local special products, batik painting, which is a folk craftwork with a profound history, can be a very exquisite souvenir for tourists to take home. Sandao Tea, a custom of the Bai people in Dali to entertain guests and friends, can be also very impressive for tourists.
