Introduction
 

Chuxiong Autonomous Prefecture is located in the middle-northern part of Yunnan Province, in the middle of Yungui Plateau. It covers an area of 29,258 sq km. Its population is 2.7 million.

Chuxiong has a subtropical monsoon climate with a large temperature difference between day and night. There is no bitterly cold winter or extremely hot summer. The average temperature is 15.7°C. The average annual precipitation totals approximately 900 mm.

Chuxiong is rich in mineral and water resources. Minerals such as coal, oil shale, gold, copper, lead, zinc and limestone are abundant. Theoretical reserves of hydro energy and available energy are 24,400 kw and 23,800 kw, respectively.

Transportation in Chuxiong mainly relies on highways and railways. The Kunming-Chuxiong Railway and the Chuxiong-Dali Expressway run through the prefecture. In addition, the State Highway 320 also traverses the prefecture and extends to Burma.
 
Economic Features
 
Chuxiong realized GDP of RMB 40.4 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 11.3% year on year. The prefecture's GDP accounted for approximately 6.5% of Yunnan's total.

The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 9.05 billion in 2010, accounting for 22.4% of the prefecture's GDP. The total output value of the sector amounted to RMB 15.2 billion, representing a rise of 3.6% year on year, while total output of grain amounted to 0.96  million tons, down 6% year on year.

Secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor to the prefecture's economy, realized value-added industrial output of RMB 17.18 billion, accounting for 42.5% of the prefecture's total.

The industrial sector realized total industrial output of RMB 29.87 billion, up 24.4% year on year. Tobacco, pharmaceuticals and metallurgy are the major industries in Chuxiong. In 2010, these industries realized value-added industrial output of RMB 8.54 billion, accounting for 60.8% of the industrial sector's total.

The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 14.2 billion, accounting for 35.1% of the prefecture's total GDP in 2010. 

Tourism is the most important pillar of the service sector. During 2010, 9.64 million domestic tourists visited the prefecture, up 18.7% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 3.1 billion, representing a rise of 44% compared to the previous year. 

The total import and export value of the prefecture amounted to US$108.43 million in 2010, with a rise of 56.4% over the previous year. Exports rose 71.3% to US$103.51 million, while imports sank 44.8% to US$4.92 million. Major export goods are agriculture products and billet products. ASEAN member nations are the primary trading partners of the prefecture.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Chuxiong has been home to human beings for a long time. As early as 1.7 million years ago, the Yuanmou People, who were able to make stone tools and use fire, were living in this area. The earliest bronze drums were also discovered in the Chuxiong area.

Chuxiong is a multi-cultural prefecture with many ethnic minority groups. Han Culture and Yi Culture are dominant in Chuxiong.
 
Tourist Attraction
 

The popular tourist attractions of Chuxiong include the Ancient Town of the Yi people, Ailao Mountain Natural Reserve, Wuding Lion Mountain, Yuanmou Stone Forest, Zixi Mountain, Dayao White Tower, Yongrenfang Mountain, Wanjiaba Ancient Tombs, and Lufong Dinosaur Valley.

Ailao Mountain Natural Reserve is a state-level natural reserve in China.

Camellias, silk and walnuts are appraised as three treasures of the prefecture-level prefecture.
