Introduction
 

Baoshan is located in the western part of Yunnan Province. It covers an area of 19,637 sq km. Its population is 2.5 million by 2009.

Baoshan has a subtropical inland plateau climate with no extremely hot summer or bitter cold winter. The average temperature is 15.5-23.7°C, while the average annual precipitation totals 850-950 mm.

Baoshan is replete with mineral resources such as natural gas, titanium-iron, lead, zinc, diatomite and wollastonite. The theoretical hydro-energy of Lancangjiang River and Nujiang River amounts to 2.8 million kw, making Baoshan is an important hydro-energy exploitation area in Yunnan. In addition, Baoshan is also rich in forest and terrestrial heat resources.

Transportation in Baoshan is very convenient. State Highway 320 (Shanghai-Ruili) and Baoshan-Longling Expressway run through the city. Baoshan Airport, 9 km from downtown Baoshan, offers flights to Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province.

 
Economic Features
 
Baoshan realized GDP of RMB 26.1 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 12.5% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 4.2% of Yunnan's total.

The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 7.9 billion in 2010, accounting for 30.3% of the city's GDP. Total output of grains 'reached 1.13 million tons, rising 4% year on year.

In 2010, secondary industry (industry and construction), the second smallest contributor to Baoshan's economy, realized value-added industrial output of RMB 8.05 billion, accounting for only 30.9% of the city's total.

During the same year, the industrial sector realized value-added industrial output of RMB 5.93 billion, up 18.1% year on year. 'The private sector generated industrial output of RMB 5.3 billion, making up 21.9% of the industrial sector's total.

There is a Shanghai-listed company, namely Yunnan Bowin Technology Industry<600883>, based in Baoshan. It is mainly engaged in cement production. In 2009, the company's revenue exceeded RMB 90 million, up 59.1% year on year, while its net profit topped RMB 23.5 billion, rising 932.4% year on year.

The service sector, the largest contributor to Baoshan's economy, generated value-added output of RMB 10.14 billion in 2010, accounting for 38.8% of the city's total GDP.

Tourism is the most important pillar of the service sector. During 2010, 6.2 million tourists visited the city, up 10.7% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 3.08 billion, representing a rise of 30.9% compared to the previous year. Income from foreign tourists totaled US$22.57 million, increasing by 15.8% year on year.

In 2010, the total value of imports and exports amounted to US$190 million (comprising export value of US$110 million and import value of US$80 million), up 86.7% year on year. The city's major export goods are wood products and silicon. The U.S. and Canada are important export destinations of the city.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Baoshan boasts a profound history. The Tangzigou Culture, with history of 7 to 8 thousand years, is considered one of the headstreams of Chinese culture. In addition, Baoshan is also famous for its revolutionary history. From 1942-1945, during the Dianxi Anti-Japanese War, the people of Baoshan fought against the Japanese to protect the southwestern gateway of China.

Baoshan is a multi-cultural prefecture-level city with many ethnic minority groups, including the Han, the Yi, the Miao, the Hui, and the Dai, among others. They live together harmoniously and retain their cultural legacy and life practices.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Baoshan is rich in beautiful natural tourism resources including Tengchong Hot Sea, which is not only a marvelous spectacle but also a hot spring good for health, and Tengchong Cluster of Volcanoes. Tourists should also visit Wofo Temple (Reclining Buddha Temple).

Local folk festivals such as the Water-Splashing Festival of the Dai people, the Torch Festival of the Yi people, and the Knife-Mounting Festival of the Lisu people attract millions of tourists to to Baoshan.

When it comes to special snacks, Diao Plum, which is a local unique glazed fruit, and Dajiujia, a special type of noodle, can be very good choices for tourists.
