Introduction
 

Yuxi is located in the middle part of Yunnan Province. It covers an area of 15,285 sq km. Its population is 2.29 million.  

Yuxi has a subtropical inland plateau climate with no extremely hot summer or bitter cold winter. The average temperature is 15.5-23.7°C, while the average annual precipitation totals 850-950 mm.

Yuxi is replete with mineral resources such as iron, copper, nickel, cobalt and phosphorus. Reserves of these minerals amount to 716 million tons, 2.9 million tons, 512,000 tons, 233,000 tons, 572 million tons, accounting for 32.9%, 42.4%, 74%, 58% and 19.5% of the province's total, respectively.

Transportation in Yuxi mainly relies on the State Highway 213 (Lanzhou of Gansu Province to Jinghong of Yunnan Province).
 
Economic Features
 
Yuxi realized GDP of RMB 73.65 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 12.8% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 11.9% of Yunnan's total and ranked third after Kunming, the capital of Yunnan, and Qujing in the province.

The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 6.75 billion in 2010, accounting for 4% of the city's GDP. Secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor to Yuxi's economy, realized value-added industrial output of RMB 44.8 billion, accounting for 60.9% of the city's total.

The industrial sector realized value-added industrial output of RMB 42.78 billion, up 15.2% year on year, while value-added industrial output of industrial enterprises with designated size or above increased by 15.9% to RMB 39.86 billion, contributing 93% to the industrial sector's total.

Tobacco-related products, minerals and electricity are the pillar industries of the city. In 2010, the tobacco industry realized value-added industrial output of RMB 25.9 billion, contributing 65% to the industrial sector's total.

Yuxi-based Hongta Group owns a lot of famous cigarette brands such as Hongmei, Hongtashan and Yuxi. The three brands' market shares reached approximately 5.1%, 2.7% and 0.7% in 2007, respectively. In 2009, the tobacco producer realized gross profit of RMB 30 billion, up 10.2% year on year. 

The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 22.08 billion in 2010, accounting for 30% of the city's total GDP.

Tourism is the most important pillar of the service sector. During 2010, 11.64 million tourists visited the city, up 19.7% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 4.05 billion, representing a rise of 19.5% compared to the previous year.

In 2010, the total value of imports and exports amounted to US$285.67 million (comprising export value of US$265.03 million and import value of US$20.64 million), up 82.3% year on year. The city's major export goods are phosphorus, chemical products, agricultural products and hardware. The U.S., Japan, Thailand and South Korea are important export destinations of the city.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Because of its pleasant climate, Yuxi is rich in crops such as tobacco, and is honored as the Barn of Middle Yunnan Province and the Hometown of Yunnan Tobacco.

In addition, Yuxi is known as a town of folk lanterns. In all the parks of the city, there are a lot of unique and beautiful lanterns that delight tourists from all over the world.

Nie Er, the famous composer of The March of the Volunteers, the national anthem of China, was born in Yuxi.

The Rice Vermicelli Festival, which lasts for three months, is the most popular festival. During the festival, friends and relatives gather together to cook and eat rice vermicelli.
 
Tourist Attraction
 

Yuxi is rich in beautiful natural tourism resources including Mt. Mopan Scenic Area, Mt. Yuanlao Scenic Area, Mt. Xiushan, Mt. Maotian, Fuxian Lake, Xingyun Lake and Yudai River.

When it comes to special snacks, Bean Powder Candy (which has more than 200 years of history and is made from soya beans and broad beans), and Gingili Pieces (which are made of white gingili and white sugar), can be delicious snack presents for tourists.
