Introduction
 

Ya'an is located in middle of Sichuan Province, on the border between Sichuan Basin and Qinzhang Plateau. Ya'an covers an area of 15,314 sq km and has a population of 1.6 million.

Ya'an has a subtropical, humid monsoon climate, and does not have bitter cold winters or extremely hot summers. The average temperature is 16.2-18°C, while the annual precipitation ranges from 750 mm to 1500 mm.

Ya'an is rich in natural resources. Forests cover 50.8% of the city’s lands. Minerals such as asbestos, manganese, and coal are abundant. In addition, Ya'an is famous for its granite and marble building materials throughout China.

Transportation in Ya'an mainly relies on highways. It is 150 km from Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province. The Sichuan-Tibet Highway and the Sichuan-Yunnan Highway run through Ya'an and intersect within the city.

 
Economic Features
 
The economy of Ya'an recovered quickly after the earthquake in 2008. Ya'an realized GDP of RMB 28.65 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 15.3% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 1.7% of Sichuan's total and ranked eighteenth in the province. The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 4.99 billion in 2010, accounting for 17.4% of the city's GDP.

In 2010, the value-added industrial output of secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor of the city's economy, amounted to RMB 15.78 billion and accounted for 55.1% of the city's total. The value-added industrial output generated by the industrial sector increased by 25.1% year on year to RMB 13.51 billion, contributing 47% to the city's GDP.

Machinery, metallurgy, building materials and agriculture products processing are the pillar industries of the city. In 2009, Ya'an produced 296,800 tons of ferrous alloys, 1.9 million tons of cement and 52,300 tons of feedstuffs.

The development of the industry sector lags behind most other cities in Sichuan Province. Currently, Ya'an has no listed companies. 

In 2010, the service sector generated value-added output of RMB 7.89 billion, contributing 27.5% of the city's GDP.

In 2010, the city's export value was up 40.1% year on year to US$12.26 million. The city approved three foreign-invested projects. The utilized FDI in the city was US$27.22 million in 2009.

In 2010, 10 million domestic tourists visited the city, up 25.63% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 5.06 billion, representing a rise of 27.07% over last year.

Ya'an was badly damaged by the Wenchuan Earthquake on May 12, 2008. The direct economic loss of the city amounted to RMB 14.7 billion.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Since Ya'an, also called Rain City, is seated between Sichuan Basin and Tibet Plateau, Han culture is integrated into the local minority culture here. Ya'an is a blend of the modern central city and the original natural ecological zone as well as the only gateway to the ancient Southern Silk Road.

In addition, Ya'an is also the core area of the habitat of the giant panda, which is on the World Natural Heritage List. It is also the birthplace of tea culture, and its tea growing history can be traced back to the Western Han Dynasty over 2,000 years ago.

Ya'an also has a revolutionary history. The Red Army established a Soviet Regime in the Yucheng Area and Lushan County in 1935.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Ya'an is rich in historical and cultural landmarks as well as beautiful natural scenery. Tourists should visit White Horse Spring, Bifeng Gorge, Mengshan Mountain Scenery Spot, the Cliff Figures of Tang Dynasty, the Yandao Ancient Town Ruins, the Daban Bridge Scenery Area, Zhougong Mountain Hot Spring, Shangli Ancient Town, and Han Gaoyi Mausoleum.

Ya’an is the world-famous hometown of the giant pandas because the first panda was discovered in Ya'an. The Chinese Giant Panda Protection and Research Center was established in Ya'an in recognition of the value of these animals.

When it comes to local special products, Mengding Tea, which used to be the tribute tea for emperors, can be a very good present for tourists to take home.
