Introduction
 

Panzhihua is located in the southern part of Sichuan Province, at the junction of the Jinsha River and the Yalong River, bordering Yunnan Province. The city covers an area of 7,440 sq km and has a population of 1.1 million.

Panzhihua lies in a subtropical climate zone with a long, hot summer and a large temperature difference between day and night. It gets plenty of sunshine and rainfall. The average temperature is 19-21°C, while the average annual precipitation is 1,600 mm.

Panzhihua is rich in mineral resources. There are 39 varieties of proven mineral resources, including coal, vanadium-titanium magnet, limestone, dolostone, graphite and granite. Demonstrated reserves of coal and vanadium-titanium magnet amount to 369 million tons and 6.7 billion tons respectively. In addition, water resources are abundant in Panzhihua. In 2007, installed capacity of hydropower totaled 3.5 million kw.

Panzhihua is 749km from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, and 351km from Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province. Transportation in Panzhihua mainly relies on highways and railways. State Highway 108 and the Chengdu-Kunmng Railway run through the city from north to south.

 
Economic Features
 
Panzhihua realized GDP of RMB 52.39 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 15.1% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 3.7% of Sichuan's total and ranked fifteenth in the province.

Panzhihua is a major industrial city in Sichuan. In 2010, value-added output of secondary industry (industry and construction) amounted to RMB 38.6 billion, accounting for 73.8% of the city's total. The value-added industrial output of the industrial sector reached RMB 36.4 billion, up 18% year on year.

Panzhihua's pillar industries are iron and steel, vanadium-titanium, energy and chemicals. In 2007, these industries realized industrial output of RMB 45.6 billion, RMB 6.65 billion, RMB 23.6 billion and RMB 7.25 billion. As a whole, the total industrial output of these industries amounted to RMB 83.1 billion, contributing 85.7% to the total.

There is a Shenzhen-listed company based in Panzhihua. Panzhihua New Steel & Vanadium<000629>, is a company principally engaged in the manufacture and sale of iron, steel and vanadium products. The company suffered losses in 2008 and 2009. In the first half of 2010, the company gained a net profit of RMB 578 million.

In 2010, the service sector generated value-added output of RMB 11.58 billion, contributing 22.1% of the city's GDP.

The city's total foreign trade amounted to US$248.92 million in 2010 (comprising export value of US$183.48 million and import value of US$65.44 million), representing a decrease of 66% year on year. Its major export goods are steel rail, vanadium iron, titanium dioxide, and wild fungi. The U.S., the E.U., Japan, and ASEAN member nations are the major trading partners of the city.

In 2010, tourist income amounted to RMB 4.2 billion, up 20.8% year on year, while the tourists totaled 7 million.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

As early as Qin Dynasty, people began to live in the Panzhihua area. It was designated as a prefecture-level city in 1987 by the State Council.

It is currently a multi-ethnic living area. Forty-one minority ethnic groups, including the Yi, the Lishu, the Miao, the Naxi, the Bai, the Dai, and the Man, live harmoniously in this city. The Yi people account for 8.9% of the total population, and are thus the second-largest group after the Han people.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Panzhihua has many tourist attractions, including Longtan Water-Eroded Cave, Ertan National Forest Park, Geshala Eco-tourism Zone and Cycad National Nature Reserve, and Ertan Hydropower Station.

Panzhihua has tourist programs such as Jinshajiang river drifting, the Peach Blossom Appreciation Festival, the Water-splashing Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival and the Kite Festival.

Though the most popular dining choice in Panzhihua is traditional Sichuan cuisine, farmhouse cuisines offer more special choices for tourists.
