Introduction
 

Wulanchabu is located in the middle part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Its terrain comprises four parts, namely, the Mongolian Plateau, the Wulanchabu Hills, the Yangshan Mountains and the Huangtu Hills. The city covers an area of 54,491 sq km and its population is 2.1 million.

Wulanchabu has a continental monsoon climate with four clearly distinct seasons and plenty of sunshine. The average annual temperature is 0-7°C, while the average annual precipitation total 350-450 mm.

Wulanchabu is replete with various natural resources, such as forest, grassland, minerals, and solar and wind energy.

Transportation in Wulanchabu mainly relies on railways and highways. Four railways, namely the Jining-Erenhot, Jining-Tongliao, Fongzhen-Zhungeer, and Beijing-Baotou railways, run through the city and the counties under its jurisdiction.  The Jining-Erenhot Railway connects to railways of Mongolia and extends to European countries. The Fongzhen-Zhungeer Railway connects the city with Zhungeer Coalfield, the largest coalfield in China. The field’s proven coal reserves amount to 25.3 billion tons. Additionally, State Highway 110, State Highway 208 and the Beijing-Hohhot Expressway also run across the city.

 
Economic Features
 
Wulanchabu realized GDP of RMB 43.5 billion in 2008, representing a rise of 13.6% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 5.6% of Inner Mongolia's total.

In 2008, value-added industrial output of secondary industry (industry and construction) amounted to RMB 21.1 billion, accounting for 48.7% of the city's total.

Wulanchabu’s pillar industries are electricity, building materials, chemical, and agricultural and livestock products processing. These industries realized value-added output of RMB 14.3 billion, contributing 89.9% to the city’s total from enterprises with designated size and above.

Wind power has been well used by Wulanchabu. Huitengxile Wind Power Plant, the largest active wind farm in China, currently has installed capacity of 189,000 kw.

The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 14.1 billion, contributing 32.4% to the city's total GDP in 2009. During 2009, 3.3 million tourists visited the city, generating tourism income of RMB 1.5 billion, an increase of 25.4% compared to the same period of the previous year.  

In 2009, Wulanchabu’s total foreign trade amounted to US$100.8 million, representing an increase of 139.5% year on year. The major export goods of the city are potatoes and carrots, while key imported goods are mainly high-tech equipment. The Republic of Mongolia and Russia are the city’s major trading partners.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Wulanchabu has approximately six thousand years of history. It is a multi-ethnic area and the birthplace of North China’s Miaozigou Culture and Laohushan Culture (Tiger Mountain Culture).

Wulanchabu was once an important military stronghold. Ethnic groups that have lived in the city include the Khitan, Nuzhen, Tatar and Mongol people. Currently, the various ethnic groups live together harmoniously and retain their cultural legacy and life practices.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Wulanchabu boasts beautiful natural scenery. The forest and grass coverage rate of the city is 58.8%. Gegentala Tourist Center is an AAAA national level scenery spot (the second highest level in China). Here tourists are able to enjoy the attractive scenery of the grasslands, the hospitality of local people and various experiences such as camel riding, horse racing, archery, and wrestling.

Other interesting scenic spots include the Huitengxile Grassland, the Two Dragons Shentai National Forest Park, Sumu Mountain, the Wulanchabu Rock Paintings, and Tiger Mountain Park.

In Wulanchabu, roast lamb leg, mutton rotisserie, milk tea and roasted chestnuts are very common.
