Introduction
 

Chifeng is located in the southeast part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, at the intersection of Inner Mongolia, Hebei Province and Liaoning Province, and has an area of 90,275 sq km and a population of 4.33 million. It is 315 km from Beijing, the capital of China.

Chifeng has a semi-dry continental monsoon climate with a dry, windy spring, a rainy summer, a short, cool autumn and long, chilly winter.

Chifeng is rich in natural resources. There are approximately 70 natural lakes, including Dalinoer Lake, the third largest lake in Inner Mongolia. Forests cover 30.9% of the city’s lands. Additionally, Chifeng has approximately 70 types of mineral resources, including coal, oil, gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, tungsten, iron, marble and so on.  Chifeng plans to build a large zinc production plant to take better advantage of its zinc reserves.

Chifeng has convenient access to transportation. The Chifeng Airport is seated in the southwest on the outskirts of Chifeng city and operates flights to Beijing, Hohhot and some other cities. Additionally, the Beijing-Tongliao Railway, State Highway 306 and State Highway 305 cross Chifeng from east to west, while State Highway 111 and State Highway 303 run through the city from north to south.

 
Economic Features
 
Chifeng realized GDP of RMB 108 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 15% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 12% of Inner Mongolia's total. Value-added output of secondary industry (industry and construction) accounted for 51.1% of the city's total and ranked fifth in the autonomous region.

Chifeng's primary industries are energy, metallurgy, food processing, construction materials, textiles, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Value-added industrial output of these industries increased by 19.7% year on year to RMB 45.09 billion in 2010, contributing 91.3% to the industrial sector's total.

Value-added industrial output of metallurgy totaled RMB 22 billion, accounting for 47.7% of the city's total. In 2009, the city produced 5.2 million tons of iron and 290,800 tons of nonferrous metal.

Famous listed enterprises of the city include Chifeng Fulong Thermal Power<000426>, which is principally engaged in the production of electricity, Inner Mongolia PingZhuang Energy Resources<780>, which focuses on the processing and distribution of coal, and Tianjin Good Hand Railway Holding<000594>, which is mainly engaged in the construction and operation of railways, as well as the development and leasing of real estate.

For the service sector, as Chifeng is replete with tourism resources, in 2010, tourist arrivals amounted to 5.8 million, up 11.5% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 7.4 billion, increasing 21.3% compared to the previous year.  

In 2010, utilized FDI in the city amounted to US$55.81 million ,up 10.8% year on year. The city's total foreign trade amounted to US$1.06 billion (comprising export value of US$145 million and import value of US$920 million), representing an increase of 108.6% year on year. Textiles have become the major export goods of the city, while the key imported goods include refined copper powder and equipment. Italy, Japan, the United States, South Korea and Switzerland are Chifeng's top five international trading partners.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Abundant archeological discoveries testify that in Neolithic Age, the Inner Mongolian ancestors created the brilliant Hongshan Culture in this area. Additionally, Chifeng is also an important birthplace of grassland bronze culture, Khitan culture and Liao culture. The Xinglong Wajuluo site, which is named the first village of China, extends the city's recorded history back 8000 years.

Currently, Chifeng is a multi-cultural city and home to approximately 30 ethnic minority groups.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Chifeng is rich in tourism resources. Tourist attractions such as the Gongger Grassland, which is regarded as the best natural grazing land in Inner Mongolia and the nearest grassland from Beijing, the Arshihaty (Ashihatu) Stone Forest, the Bokelong Desert Tourist Zone, the Dalinoer Lake, and Longquan Temple attract millions of tourists to visit every year.

In Chifeng, the Mongols are the main ethnic group in the city. They mainly consume grains, milk, and meat, as well as milk tea. Additionally, roast lamb and fried millet are also very popular in the city.
