Introduction
 

Hulumbeier is located in the northeastern part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, bordering Heilongjiang province to the east, the Republic of Mongolia on the west and Russia on the north. The city covers an area of 263,953 sq km, accounting for 21.4% of Inner Mongolia's total. Its population amounts to only 2.7 million.

Hulumbeier is divided by the Great Khingan Mountain. The east side of the mountain enjoys a seasonal climate while the west side has a continental climate. The average annual temperature is -5-2°C, while the average annual precipitation is 250-500 mm.

Hulumbeier is replete with natural resources. Since the Great Khingan Mountain is located in Hulumbeier, forest coverage rate of the city’s lands amounts to 49%. Additionally, the world-famous Hulunbeier Grassland, occupying an area of 112,667 km², is one of the three most famous grasslands in the world. The grassland has more than 3000 rivers and over 500 lakes. Moreover, Hulumbeier is also rich in mineral resources such as coal, petroleum, iron, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, gold, and silver.

Hulumbeier has convenient access to transportation. There are two airports available in Hulumbeier, namely the Manzhouli Airport and the Hailaer Airport. They operate flights to major cities such as Beijing, Hohhot, Dalian and Tianjin. The Hailaer Airport is only 5 km from the city’s downtown area.

Additionally, Hulumbeier is also an important railway hub in Northeast China. There are railways connecting Hulumbeier with cities such as Chifeng, Qiqihar, Beijing and so on. State Highway 301 runs across Hulumbeier and also extends to Suifenhe, located in Heilongjiang Province, and Manzhouli, which is the largest Sino-Russian land port city in terms of total export and import value in China.

 
Economic Features
 
Hulunbeier realized GDP of RMB 93.2 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 14.9% year on year. The city's GDP accounted for approximately 10.39% of Inner Mongolia's total and ranked sixth in the autonomous region.

In 2010, value-added output of secondary industry (industry and construction) amounted to RMB 39.26 billion, accounting for 42.1% of the city's total. The industry sector generated value-added output of RMB 33.69 billion, representing a rise of 25.9% year on year. Hulunbeier's primary industries are energy and chemicals. Additionally, wood material processing, food processing and metallurgy have also been rapidly developed in recent years.
 
The service sector generated value-added industrial output of RMB 35.7 billion. The service sector is the 2nd largest GDP contributor of the city and accounted for 38.3% of the city's total GDP in 2010. During 2010, 9.8 million tourists visited the city, 22.6% more than in the previous year, and tourism income totaled RMB 14.3 billion, increasing 20.9% compared to the previous year.  

Manzhouli, the largest Sino-Russian land port city in China, is under the jurisdiction of Hulumbeier. In 2010, Hulunbeier's total foreign trade amounted to US$2.33 billion (comprising export value of US$199 million and import value of US$2.13 billion), representing increase of 7.1% year on year. The major export goods of the city are wood products, articles for daily use, vegetables, and vegetable oil, while key imported goods include crude oil and wood.  The Republic of Mongolia and Russia are the major trading partners of the city.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Hulumbeier is the birthplace of nomadic, hunting people in northern China and a multi-ethnic area that is home to Mongols, Daur, Ewenki, Oroqen, and Russians. They live here harmoniously and retain their cultural legacy and life practices.

Hulumbeier also boasts an abundant, colorful national cultural festivals including the Sebin Festival of the Ewenki people, the Bonfire Festival of the Elunchun people, the Mongolian Nadamu and Korean Elder Festivals.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Hulumbeier boasts beautiful natural scenery. Tourists should visit the Hulunbeier Grassland, the Hulun Lake and the Beier Lake. The world famous Hulunbeier Grassland is reputed to be the 'Jade of the Northland' as well as a piece of 'Green Pure Land'. It is widely believed that the best season to travel here is autumn.

In Hulumbeier, roast lamb leg and various aquatic products from Hulun Lake can be considered very good choices for guests from all over the world.

The Hulun Lake is one of the five largest freshwater lakes in all of China, covering approximately 2,339 km². The lake is a clean paradise with a huge variety of wildlife, from fishes to waterfowl.
