Zhuhai is located in the southern part of Guangdong province, which was ranked the largest economy in China in terms of GDP in 2009. Lying in the western bank of the Pearl River Delta, it borders the South China Sea to the south. It faces Hong Kong and Shenzhen to the east across the sea and borders Macau to the south. It is 140 km from Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong, to the north. Zhuhai has a subtropical marine climate, with sufficient sunlight and abundant rainfall. It is occasionally hit by typhoons in the month of May.
Zhuhai Special Economic Zone, set up in 1980, is among five special economic zones in China (Zhuhai, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Shantou and Hainan Province), which are endowed with special economic policies and flexible government measures.
Zhuhai enjoys convenient transportation systems. Zhuhai Airport, situated in the south-west of Zhuhai, offers seventy-six domestic and international routes weekly. In 2006, Zhuhai Airport started cooperation with Hong Kong Airport and currently acts as a supporting cargo-transportation airport for Hong Kong Airport.
Zhuhai Port has two major ports, Gaolan Port and Jiuzhou Port, both of which offer direct routes to Hong Kong. The freight traffic and container traffic at Zhuhai Port hit 37.1 million tons and 0.6 million TEUs respectively in 2007. Beijing-Zhuhai Highway and Jiangmen-Zhuhai Highway run through the city. Guangzhou-Zhuhai Railway, still under construction, is scheduled for completion in 2011.
Economic Features
In 2010, the GDP of Zhuhai rose 12.8% year-on-year to RMB 120.25 billion, ranking tenth in Guangdong Province. As the largest contributor to the GDP, the industry sector realized added value of RMB 65.86 billion in 2010, comprising 54.8% of Zhuhai's GDP.
Zhuhai has established electronics, information technology, home electrical appliances, petrochemicals, electrical power, bio-pharmaceuticals and precision machinery as its major industries. The industrial value-added industrial output from these industries amounted to RMB 47.48 billion.
Zhuhai is home city to a large number of companies. Examples of these companies include Gree, Eastcom Peace and Yue Yu Feng Iron & Steel. Gree, founded in 1985, is one of China's leading air-conditioner manufacturers in China. It has production bases in Zhuhai, Chongqing, Hefei and Brazil. Gree has production capacity of 15 million units of air-conditioners per year. In 2007, the company's sales revenue exceeded RMB 38 billion. Its business in Zhuhai also covers logistics and real estates. In 2007, it opened a 20,000-m2 logistics and distribution center in the city.
The foreign-trade value in Zhuhai increased 16.1% to US$43.48 billion in 2010, consisting of US$20.86 billion worth of exports and US$22.62 billion worth of imports. The mainstream export products are mechanical and electronic products. Major export destinations include Hong Kong, the U.S., Japan and Macau.
In 2010, Zhuhai had attracted a total of 213 foreign-funded projects, with foreign investments adding up to US$1.26 billion. The utilized FDI was US$1.22 billion. A total of thirty Fortune 500 enterprises have launched sixty-eight projects in Zhuhai. Canon, Flextronics and other large multinational firms have already invested in Zhuhai.
In 2003, mainland China and Macau Special Administrative Region signed the "Mainland and Macau Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement" (CEPA), which is an FTA-like arrangement under which two-hundred and seventy-two Macau products are exempted from customer tariffs. Later, in 2005 and 2006, more supplementary agreements were signed, further facilitating the trade and investments between the two parties. Due to its proximity to Macau, Zhuhai's economic ties with Macau will be strengthened.
Cultural Highlights
The history of Zhuhai can be traced back to the Neolithic Age, when the ancient people were living in the area of what is currently known as Zhuhai four-to-five-thousand years ago. In Qin Dynasty (221-206BC), the government set up an administrative department in the region. In 1980, Zhuhai established Zhuhai Special Economic Zone. Lingnan Culture is prevailing in the city.

Zhuhai enjoys rich cultural and historical relics as well as beautiful, natural scenery. The most recommended attractions in the city include Zhuhai Fisher Girl Statue, New Yuanmingyuan Garden, Pearl Land Amusement Park, Jiuzhou City, Meixi Royal Stone Archways, Huangyang Mountain and Baiteng Lake. Cantonese cuisines are very popular in Zhuhai. The cuisines in the city often use four kinds of seafood: the crabs of Doumen, the oysters of Hengqin Island, the lotus roots in Baiteng Lake, and the prawns of Wanshan Town.
